Science meets culture. ■ Movie Afghan Star This is a fascinating study of the people who risked their lives to appear on the Afghan version of American Idol after years of Taliban oppression. The cultural clashes are incredibly poignant. “Nursing is more than a job; it’s a way to serve God and people, whether you are in Africa, Ohio, or Washington.” — Stephanie Carlton ’02 Stephanie discerns this truth from a unique perspective. Her nursing degree led her to Washington, D.C., where she guides Senate Republican policy on the Medicaid and Medicare Advantage programs. Describing her grad school application process, she said, “Cedarville’s reputation opened the door to a top-15 business school.” Today, 1,318 graduates of Cedarville’s nursing program are living out the vision that began more than 25 years ago. That vision focused on two strategic priorities for the new program: recognized excellence in professional training and Christ-centered service. Excellent Education “When I see an application from a Cedarville nursing graduate, I bump it to the top of the list. The level of knowledge, skill, excellence, and leadership of Cedarville’s graduates is unparalleled.” — Assistant Dean of Research, Ph.D., nursing program at a major state university Rachel Latario ’10 wrote to thank her nursing professors, saying, “I just accepted a position in St. Joseph Hospital’s new graduate residency program. This hospital is the best north of Boston and is renowned for its highly competitive and exceptional graduate residency program.” The excellence of professional training is recognized by hospital administrators who not only help provide practical experience but also provide jobs after graduation. A local hospital administrator told us, “We hire your graduates every chance we get.” Christ-Centered Ministry “Cedarville’s nursing program prepared me not simply to be a good nurse but also to be an excellent steward of the gifts God gave me and the training I received.” — Jennie Rowell ’05 Of course, Cedarville would not develop a program if it did not reflect a biblical worldview and provide opportunities for Christ-centered ministry. The key is outstanding faculty members who challenge students academically and model Christlike service. Stephanie summed it up best, saying, “I’ll bet every Cedarville nursing grad remembers the verse from 2 Peter 1:5–8: ‘But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.’ That’s the vision you catch through Cedarville’s nursing program.” 44 spring 2011
