Inspire, Spring 2011
overheard Cedarville University 9 As one of my co-workers at Chuck’s, Chris Brown ’99, was struggling to refill a milk machine, an upperclassman hassled him, saying, “Aren’t you done yet?” The final step in replacing the milk is cutting the rubber spout. Chris made sure there was some milk in the spout and made a skillful cut — spraying the upperclassman! Dave Gums ’99, Clear Lake, South Dakota In 2000, on the first day in the new dining hall in the Stevens Student Center, a poor Chuck’s worker dropped and broke a whole tray of plates , and everyone applauded. Jennifer (Bogenschutz) Burgess ’04, Wilmington, Ohio During my freshman year, my boyfriend came to visit, so my friends transformed a table in Chuck’s with a tablecloth, candles, and a rose to create a fine dining experience. Our waiter, Rob Bouwens ’98, met us at the door in a tuxedo; Janette Baker ’98 served our food; Nathan James ’97 serenaded us with violin music; and Eric Fiveland ’99 photographed the event. Annie (Weeks) Ross ’00, Hornsby, Australia On my birthday, my roommate and I planned to eat together upstairs in “Up-Chuck’s.” When I arrived, all of my friends were there. They made me wear a huge poster board pope hat and presented me with a menu of what they were planning to “cook” for me. Christie (Fairchild) Cade ’05, Raleigh, North Carolina My boyfriend and now husband, Brendan, drove out from New Jersey and surprised me for my 21st birthday. He showed up in Chuck’s dressed as a gorilla and presented me with roses and balloons in front of everyone! Jamie (Anfang) Coyne ’06, West Milford, New Jersey During dinner, my friend decided to test a theory that squeezing an egg with the same amount of pressure on all sides will prevent it from cracking. The theory proved true ... to a certain point. But then the egg broke, and the yolk shot all over! You can still see egg stains on the ceiling.
