A lumnotes CLASS NEWS 50s Bill Fife '53 and his wife, Peg, are enjoying their retirement years examining the history of Greene County (Ohio). Bill volunteers at the Greene County Historical Society, while Peg researches and documents sites for the Ohio Underground Railroad Association. Bill and Peg are active members of Memorial United Presbyterian Church. 60s Alumna Named To STC Board Of Directors Sandra Harner '64, Cedarville College associate professor of English and founder of the professional and technical communications program, has been appointed to the executive board of directors of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). Sandi, who has been a member of SIC since 1984, will serve as assistant to the president in charge of academic and research programs. Her responsibilities include the management of committees on academe-industry relationships, research grants, scholarships, Sigma Tau Chi (the SIC student honorary fraternity), and curricula development for schools. In addition, she will serve as a summit representative for STC at annual meetings of a confederation of academic-oriented and industry-oriented professional associations in technical communication. The SIC is a 20,000-member organization of writers, editors, illustrators, educators, and communicators whose mission is to improve the quality and effectiveness of technical communication for audiences worldwide. The society has 144 chapters representing 36 countries. Gary Jacobs'64 recently retired from 17 years of service on the Toward Independence, Inc. board of directors. Toward Independence serves as an alternative to institutionalization for people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Also, in February 1999, Gary retired from his guidance counselor position at Cedarville High School Robert Pereira '69 was selected Exemplary Administrator of the Year by the Wisconsin Association of Non- Public Schools. Robert is in his thirtieth year in education, working at both public and Christian schools during this time. For the past 10 years, he has served as the Wisconsin state representative for the Association of Christian Schools International. 70s Edythe Carity Davison '73 and her husband, Tim, celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary on March 16, 1999. Edythe was recently honored for 25 years at Xenia Nazarene Christian School (Ohio), where she is a kindergarten teacher. Dan Steere'75 was ordained in August 1997 and is currently the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Summerville, Georgia. From 1990 to 1998, Dan was headmaster of Harvester Christian Academy and saw the school grow from 75 to 350 students. He and his wife, Susan Scott Steere '72, have four children. Jack Caulfield '77 recently wrote a one-man play about William Tyndale. Jack has been invited to become a member of the Tyndale Society based in England. JoEllen Priola '77 is currently a detective for the Indiana State Police, where she has also been a state trooper for 15 years. Barrett Moshacker'79 celebrates his 10-year anniversary as headmaster at Covenant Day School near Charlotte, North Carolina. Barrett is also acting as pastor of Christian education at Christ Covenant Church. 80s Kevin Browne'80 is an Air Force chaplain at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma. He serves as director of student ministry and youth ministry and pastor of the contemporary praise and worship service at the base chapel. He recently completed a tour of duty at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. Jim Leightenheimer '80, associate professor of broadcasting at Cedarville College, and Jeremy Whaley '99, are involved with Adventures in Time, a radio show that features fictional travels through various historic eras in Dayton's history. Jim and Jeremy are helping to bring back the magic of radio with an adventure show that has a local twist. Michael Stephens'80 was selected to serve on the Xenia Economic Growth Corporation Advisory Committee. Michael lives in Xenia, Ohio, where he is president of Greene Memorial Hospital. Daniel Betzel'82 has been appointed to the advisory board of the Journal of Practical Estate Planning. He will also serve as a regular columnist. Susan Thompson Zonca'82 is employed part-time as a consultant for Ford Motor Company in Michigan. After obtaining an English education degree at Cedarville, she earned her master's degree in corporate training in 1987, transitioning from teaching high school English to working in business. She and her husband, Christopher, reside in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, with their two children, Ethan(7)and Adam (4). Mark Mathews'86 and his wife, Kimberly, live in Cordova, Tennessee with their two daughters, Rebekah (5)and Jessica (2). Mark owns an aircraft service center, Memphis Propeller Service, Inc. Jim Unger '86 has been promoted to product engineer with Textron Automotive. His wife, Eileen Friesen Unger '88, enjoys staying at home with their two children, Kandin and Javin. The family resides in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Thurman Payton '87 was recently ordained into the gospel ministry by Holt Baptist Church in Holt, Michigan, where he serves as associate pastor. Members of the ordination council which examined Thurman's faith, character, and doctrine included Doug Phillips '82, James Beight '87, and David Beverly '87. David Zehrung'87 has earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from George Mason University (Virginia). After completing his internship at Perry Point VA Hospital, he passed the state and national licensing exams. He works at a family medical practice in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. David is married to Gina Long Zehrung '87, and they have three children: Landis (7), Levi (5), and Logan (3). Bob '88 and Dannah Barker Gresh '89 announce that Dannah has just finished writing a book for Moody Press. She leads retreats which encourage teenage girls to remain pure. She recently taught a retreat at Penn State University and also spoke at the Missouri Christian Convention. Dannah and Kimberly Sweet Powers'89 will be hosting a retreat at Regent University in late spring; the retreat is designed for married women wanting to deal with their sexuality in a Christ-like way. Katrina Plourde'89 has recently been promoted to regional director of personnel services for Human Resource Partners in Columbus, Ohio. She has worked for the company and its parent company, Holt Companies, for nine years. 90s Raquel Largent '91 completed a master's degree in occupational therapy from Eastern Michigan University. Raquel lives in Grand Blanc, Michigan, where she works as an occupational therapist on the rehabilitation unit at Genesee Health Park Medical Center. Bill Pardi '91 announces the release of his second book, XML In Action, published by Microsoft Press. This book covers a new technology called XML (Extensible Markup Language) and explains how to use it to create structured data for web applications. Bill and his family reside in Edgewood, Washington. Jennifer Heritage PaskVan'92 is pleased to announce that her husband, Joe, has been promoted to commander in the United States Naval Reserve. He was also awarded the MAX award for market development at Delta Air Lines. This award is presented to the employee who made the biggest contribution to the department for the quarter. He received a crystal trophy and two first-class tickets to anywhere Delta flies. Jennifer and Joe are taking their second honeymoon in Paris this fall. The PaskVans reside in Atlanta, Georgia. Brian '92 and Dana Guy Phipps'90 are preparing for furlough from their work in Turkey. They plan to be in the United States from July 1999 to April 2000. They praise the Lord for a new apartment and rejoice in the new location which will benefit their ministry. Pray that their meetings in Turkey could become more family-oriented and not so male-dominated. The Phipps have a son, Tyson (1). Dan Reed '92 was chosen to play the part of William Clarke Quantrill for the In Search of History show on the History Channel. The filming took place at Conner Prairie Park in Indianapolis, Indiana in October 1998. Alumnus Receives Prestigious Fellowship Mark Totten'96 has been named a recipient of a Pew Youngers Scholars Program graduate fellowship. Currently completing his master's degree in theology at Yale Divinity School, Mark plans to use the fellowship to begin doctoral studies in Christian ethics at Yale next year. Prior to his studies at Yale, the Kalamazoo, Michigan native earned a bachelor's degree in communications at Cedarville and spent a year studying philosophy and theology at the University of Aberdeen (Scotland) through a Rotary Fellowship. The Pew Younger Scholars Program seeks to nurture the next generation of Christian intellectuals by encouraging talented students from a select list of Christian colleges and seminaries to pursue scholarly vocations. Mark, one of ten fellows chosen nationwide, will receive a S39,000, three-year fellowship. Tara Burns'93 recently moved to Augusta, Georgia to work for Monsanto as a biochemist in their new life science division (dairy facility). Brenda Woods'93 is pursuing her master's degree in education at Columbia University. She is teaching second grade at Geneva School of Manhattan, a Christian school for classical education. Johanna Chang '95 works with governmental affairs at the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority in Orlando, Florida. Tim '95 and Naomi Jensen Cowley'95 have moved to Cebu City in the Philippines until March 2000. Naomi is attending a Christian school that teaches midwifery in a Third World setting. This training will be valuable because the couple hopes to eventually work in Mozambique. While in Cebu City, Tim will take care of Marika (18 months). Melinda Siert MacKinnon '95 graduated in December 1998 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Melinda is currently working at Sinai Samaritan Hospital as a registered nurse in the emergency room. Shawn McDowell'95 was recently promoted to bank officer with Fifth Third Bank's Eastown Banking Center. Shawn resides in Clayton, Ohio. Sara Clayton '97 has recently completed a research assistantship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Center for Digestive Diseases. The study focused on the effect of music therapy on discomfort and compliance as associated with the flexible sigmoidoscopy procedure. Sara finished graduate study in music therapy in May 1999 and is awaiting an internship placement. Andrew Deister '97 is a nuclear power instructor in the United States Navy. He and his wife, Courtney Holler '98N, reside in Goose Creek, South Carolina. Brian Read '97 is a juvenile probation officer working in a junior high school. He teaches students about violence prevention and the juvenile court system while educating students on the changes to the juvenile laws in Arizona. Brian resides in Bullhead City, Arizona. Vance Smith '97 has earned his master's in nutritional sciences from Kansas State University. He will be entering medical school in the fall. Vance is the minister of music at Grace Baptist Church in Manhattan, Kansas. Peter Sutton '97 continues to serve as youth pastor at Christ Church United Methodist. He and his wife, Jocelyn, reside in ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Ryan Anderson '08 works as a marketing analyst for Principal Financial Group in Des Moines, Iowa. He is pursuing a master's in business administration at Drake University. Rebecca Comfort'98 is working on her master's degree in social work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Heather Fourman '98 resides in Morgantown, West Virginia. She is an English instructor at West Virginia University, where she is also enrolled as an English graduate student. Richard '98 and Lesley Shover Porter '98 live in Dayton, Ohio. Lesley is a registered nurse at the Bristol House of Springfield. Joseph Preston '98 is enrolled at Dallas Theological Seminary. He is pursuing a master's of theology degree in pastoral leadership/New Testament. Tiffany Zimmerman '98 lives in San Antonio, Texas. She is working on a research paper dealing with cultic psychology. ONE IN CHRIST David Gardner '56 and Lois Hentschel were married April 2, 1999. David and Lois plan to continue the ministry of relieving home missionaries so they can raise needed support, visit their supporting churches, or receive medical treatment. The Gardners reside in Portage, Michigan. Beth Bucklew '87 and D. Robert Stiles Ill '99 were married on August 1, 1998 at Bible Baptist Church in Newark, Ohio. Many Cedarville College alumni participated in the ceremony, including: Esther Bucklew Villinger '85, Carol Bliss '87, Brad '94 and Sarah Stiles Palmer '94, Steve Thompson '81, and Dave Meckley '98. After their honeymoon in Florida, the Stiles returned to Cedarville where Beth works as the donor relations coordinator at Cedarville College, and Robert is seeking a career in law enforcement. Stephen Jones'92 and Gail Currall '94 were married March 27, 1999 in Dayton, Ohio. Gail is an administrative assistant with Life Plan Financial Group.
