Here is a brief introduction to each of these stories: John and Jennifer Schritz Butcher'90N Ourson Cass was born November 11, 1999 after a totally complication-free, full-term, normal pregnancy. Shortly after his birth, he began gaspingfor air. It was inconceivable to us that there could possibly be something wrong with our son. When we were told he had a very serious problem,a verse entered my mind.Icould only think of Job, who in the midst of losing all his children and his possessions said, "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name ofthe Lord"(Job 1:21b). Claire Fortosis Morris'87 My dad wassomeone I've admired all my lifefor his tender heartand caring spiritfor those who are hurting.Ican remember the dayIfound out he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.Iwas at work,and Icried—notknowing what was aheadfor him andfor ourfamily. Bobby and Jennifer Sainato Parschauer'91 Since moving to Austria with Word ofLife almost four years ago, the one thing we miss the most seems to be "the village;" thefamiliarfamily and friends close by thatprovide a supportsystem of encouragementand advice. Waves ofloneliness have come and gone, but now, after seeing how the Lord provided strength in our complete weakness, we treasure how He granted support in a way we never could have imagined. In December 1998, we were thrilled as our second child, Shelby Grace, was born after an uneventful pregnancy and scheduled C-section. After spending the required eight days in the hospital, we were sent home with our new little girl, having been assured she was perfect. Little did we know thatjust one day later, she would nearly die. Joel'77 and Janet Carr Harriman '77 On October 24, 1978, our daughter Jennifer was born. We immediately learned she was not "normal."Asa child, she saw a hematologist, endo- crinologist, cardiologist, geneticist, ophthalmologist, orthopedist, and who remembers what else? They finally concluded she had what they termed a "genetic message"and they couldn't really explain her difficulties. She had poor muscle tone, was slow developing, and had delayed and difficult-to- understand speech, as well as delayed mental and emotional development. We had her tested by the
