Inspire, Summer 2004
During the 2004-2005 academic year, two Bible professors will be taking sabbaticals to Cambridge, England. Dr. Daniel Estes ’74, professor of Bible and associate academic vice president, and Dr. Greg Couser, associate professor of Bible and Greek, will both take advantage of the rich biblical resources of the Cambridge University Library and Tyndale House for research and writing. The Cambridge University Library is one of only five copyright libraries in the United Kingdom, which means that it receives copies of every book that is published in that country. In addition, the residential Tyndale House is the best specialized library for biblical research in the world, and in many ways it serves as the hub of evangelical theological scholarship. Furthermore, the slower pace and relaxed ambiance of England provide an ideal climate for reflection and writing. Dan will continue his administrative duties throughout the Fall Semester as he completes a book introducing the Old Testament poetical books. For Spring Semester, Dan and his wife, Carol (Towles) ’75, who is a professor in the education department, plan to work on writing projects in Cambridge. Throughout his 20 years of teaching at Cedarville, Dan has specialized in the study of the Psalms and the Old Testament Wisdom Literature. Recently he received a contract from InterVarsity Press in Britain to write the Song of Songs commentary for the Apollos Old Testament Commentary series. He plans to use his semester in Cambridge to write the first draft of the commentary manuscript. When he returns to teaching at Cedarville in Fall Semester 2005, he will no doubt make use of this material in his course on Wisdom Literature. Greg, his wife, Ronna, and their four children will spend the summer and the Fall Semester living at Tyndale House as Greg pursues the completion of several articles, one of which he anticipates will eventuate in a book. His articles include a study of the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit according to Paul; a study of the concept of community as it relates to the local church; and a study of theology proper in I Timothy. In his 10 years at Cedarville, Greg has taught Greek and a variety of classes pertaining to hermeneutics, the New Testament as a whole, and to the Pauline epistles in particular. While abroad, the Cousers also plan to spend time with Chad ’00 and Kim Schweickart Deakyne ’00, who are serving as missionaries in Europe. The Cousers will return to the U.S. on December 28. Before coming to Cedarville University in 2001, Don and his wife, Peggy, served in the nation of Nepal as missionaries with The Navigators. His teaching includes the spiritual formation classes in the general education program, courses for international studies majors, and selected philosophy courses.
