Loren holds a host of military decorations, including the Defense Superior Service Medal; the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster; the Defense Meritorious Service Medal; the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters; the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster; the Air Force Achievement Medal; the Combat Readiness Medal; the National Defense Service Medal with two bronze stars; the Armed Forces Service Medal; and the Humanitarian Service Medal with bronze star. In 1979, Loren was recognized as the Air Training Command’s Instructor Navigator of the Year. He has also received the 1995 Defense Logistics Agency Director’s Award for Organizational Excellence, and, in 1998, Cedarville University named him Alumnus of the Year. CU Presents Honorary Doctorate to Alum Major General Loren M. Reno ’70 received an honorary doctorate from Cedarville University at the University’s 109th commencement on May 7. The doctorate was in recognition of his service and leadership to our nation through the United States Air Force. Loren received a standing ovation following his acceptance speech, in which he thanked numerous CU faculty and alums for their influence in his life. He also emphasized his passion for serving God and country. Loren specifically expressed his excitement about being a part of bringing freedom to Iraq, noting, “Purple fingers, smiles behind veils, constitutions with wet ink … I love it!” Loren currently serves as director of logistics for Headquarters Air Mobility Command, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. As director of logistics, Loren provides policy and guidance to organize, train, and equip aircraft maintenance, transportation, supply, contracting, and logistics plans units at 14 major active air installations in the U.S. and 17 en route locations around the world. He is responsible for 860 active aircraft, 8,200 vehicles, and 24,000 people. He also assists in the readiness of more than 616 aircraft and 80,339 people in the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard, providing total force augmentation to support a flexible, global reach for America. A senior navigator and aircraft maintenance officer, Loren holds a joint specialty officer rating. He has more than 2,500 flight hours in a variety of military aircraft, including the C-9, C-130, T-29, and T-43. 10 Summer 2005 Firmin Named Faculty Scholar Dr. Michael Firmin was named Cedarville’s 2005 Faculty Scholar on April 19. This honor is presented annually to a University faculty member based on model classroom teaching, campus leadership, the use of pioneering teaching methodology, creative course development, and instructional support. Nominees are named by the faculty, and selection is made by the Faculty Committee to the President. Dr. Firmin is professor of psychology and chair of the department of psychology. A national certified counselor and a licensed psychologist, he received his bachelor’s degree from Calvary Bible College; master’s degrees from Calvary Theological Seminary, Bob Jones University, and Marywood University; and doctorates from Bob Jones University and Syracuse University. As a faculty scholar, Dr. Firmin has had 16 articles published and has presented papers at 42 national and international conferences. Twenty-eight of those presentations have involved collaboration with students. Dr. Firmin said, “My goal in conducting research here at Cedarville University is to help students decide where they want to go and then assist them in building a resume to get them there. … We, as faculty, are here to help students accomplish all they can.” Prof Named to Advisory Board of Chinese University Dr. Franco Gandolfi, associate professor of international business, has been named to the advisory board for the planned St. Paul University of China (SPUC). Still under development, SPUC will be located in the city of Anqing in China’s Anhui province. The university’s purpose is to foster intellectual excellence and a Christian moral vision for life and culture in students. As an advisory board member, Dr. Gandolfi will offer guidance on enhancing SPUC’s visibility, credibility, and promotion. “I feel very privileged to be able to serve the Lord in this new capacity,” Dr. Gandolfi shared. CU Prof Speaks at Norwegian and British Scholarly Events Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño ’94, assistant professor of political science, recently fulfilled invitations to speak at international conferences on political theory.
