Dustin ’97 and Mindy Miller Hughes ’98 made Ohio headlines recently with the birth of quadruplets. Jenna Marie, Hayden Matthew, Reed Matthew, and Winston Matthew were born on Easter Sunday 2005. Reed was the largest at 3 pounds, 4 ounces; while Jenna was the smallest at 1 pound, 15 ounces. Doctors had advised the Hughes to abort one of the babies to give the remaining three a better chance of survival. Dustin was quoted in the April 4, 2005 Madison Messenger as saying, “That was not an option for us. I know you hear of people turning down selective reduction because of their faith. That was part of our decision, but the other part was just the sheer humanity of it … I look at the four now and wonder which one of them they would have had us reduce … We wanted things to take their natural course.” The babies were conceived without fertility drugs, making them all the more a miracle. Only one in 700,000 people conceive quadruplets naturally, according to Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where the quads were delivered. The Hughes reside in South Charleston, Ohio.
