Inspire, Summer 2009

10 SUMMER 2009 Ninety-five-year-old Geraldine Henry ’41 spent almost 40 years as a teacher … and she never went to work a day in her life. At least, that’s the way she tells it. That’s how much she loved her job. And that’s just the kind of teachers the Cedarville University Department of Education sends out into the world. For more than 100 years, Cedarville has been preparing teachers and administrators for public, private, and Christian schools — and these stellar graduates have certainly made an impression. “Our students have a strong reputation,” said Dr. Steve Gruber ’74, chair of the department. “They’re Christlike, enthusiastic, and competent, which makes them very attractive to schools.” Much of their success comes from attending a university where faculty members exhibit the same standards of excellence they expect from students. Professors integrate biblical principles and Christian ethics into all the education courses, preparing students from the inside out. As Ruth (Hussey) Hess ’67, instructor of education, explained, “We’re committed to helping students refine the abilities and character qualities that mark a great teacher.” Another trademark of Cedarville’s education program is its emphasis on practical experience and getting students into classrooms early and often. “From conversations I have had with students at other colleges,” said Charity Hancock ’09, an integrated language arts education major, “I’ve realized the field experience in Cedarville’s program has better prepared us for our future classrooms.” These opportunities are not limited to the States, as the department also offers overseas teaching options. About 10 percent of the education seniors pursue cross-cultural teaching experiences, demonstrating the University’s commitment to preparing teachers for global ministry. Cedarville’s Master of Education program builds on this tradition of Christ- centered excellence. By offering graduate students convenient courses taught from a distinctly Christian perspective, it has quickly become a sought-after option for education professionals. With its academic rigor, top-notch faculty, and ministry-minded students, it’s no surprise the education department continues to garner the respect of schools and administrators around the world. More than a century of success is impressive. But the lives changed by Cedarville’s education alumni are the true hallmark of the department — and the influence continues to spread, one student at a time.
