Inspire, Summer 2011

Thousands of host families have provided food, shelter, and hot showers for students on traveling teams. While we’re grateful for their gracious hospitality, Dorothy said it best: “There’s no place like home.” On a trip with Abundant Life Singers, our host family’s four-year-old daughter was giddy with excitement to show us where my teammate and I were going to sleep. “You can have my bed!” she exclaimed. Not thinking anything of it, we followed her upstairs. Grinning proudly, she opened the door to a princess-themed room , complete with a twin-sized, pink-ruffled canopy bed. There’s nothing like the hospitality of a little girl to bring two guys closer together. CAMERON ARCH ’06, LA VISTA, NEBRASKA One morning I woke up to a lot of commotion. I walked upstairs in my pajamas, only to find 50 people and a graduation open house in full swing. TERRI (SCHENK) GREEN ’08, SMYRNA, GEORGIA In Israel, milk comes in plastic bags, not cartons. Our first attempt at opening a fresh bag of milk resulted in a lactic explosion all over our host home’s kitchen. PETER BRANDT ’10, MANASSAS, VIRGINIA What experience from your stay with a host family will you never forget? WINNING ENTRY! 8 SUMMER 2011 overheard
