Inspire, Summer 2011

A profound opportunity I had traveling with Lifeline Players was ministering to a girl struggling with the concept of being adopted. I had the privilege to share my adoption story and encourage her . I knew I was on the team to minister to that girl. SUE (ROGERS) WOLCOTT ’91, GRAND ISLAND, NEW YORK After a day of ministry in Australia, we returned to our host home. That evening the couple described in great detail the demon they’d seen wandering around their home! By the time Tammy (Will) Daroczy ’83 and I went to bed, we were terrified. We slept very little and prayed a whole lot ! FAITH (LINN) VISION ’83, WAYNESVILLE, OHIO Three of us from Abundant Life Singers stayed with hosts whose 15-pound, deranged cat lived in the garage. We were told not to let the cat inside the house. We failed. Late that night, armed with couch cushions, we tried herding the cat back into the garage . When the cat ran into the bathroom, one teammate stormed in after it. He finally emerged carrying the cat by the scruff of its neck. JASON SMITH ’02, BOSWELL, PENNSYLVANIA I was unaware that professor Mike DiCuirci had convinced a fellow music major, Ben Vawter ’98, that I was a member of Mensa (the high IQ society). While on a Symphonic Band tour, we stayed with hosts who spoke quite proudly of their brilliant son. Ben told them that I was pretty smart, too, being a member of MENSA and all. I could barely keep from laughing to keep the joke running … until now. CHET JENKINS ’97, NEW ALBANY, OHIO In South Africa, our puppet team spent a week with an Indian church, eating customary Indian meals without silverware. My form needed work, and my amused hosts photographed my efforts . Eight years later, as a career missionary, I worked in the same church and was shocked when they brought out those pictures to show my wife. JOSHUA AUSFAHL ’98, TACOMA, WASHINGTON On an Easter morning in Chicago, the guys on our team got up early, surprising us with a home- cooked brunch and a backyard Easter egg hunt. It was the perfect way to make us forget we were away from home on such a special day.
