Thanks for providing students with a firm foundation at Cedarville! cedarville.edu/giving THANK YOU, ALUMNI! For the Record “Shirley’s commitment to Yellow Jacket basketball is extraordinary. Even the referees look up to her because no one is more professional at the score table than she is — period.” Mark Womack ’82 Sports Information Director “Shirley is a mainstay on the sidelines at Cedarville basketball games. All of the officials in our league know Shirley and are always more comfortable with her on the scorebook. I really appreciate her loyalty and support of our program.” Pat Estepp ’98 Head Coach, Men’s Basketball “Besides being extremely good at what she does, she really cares about our program. She has a pregame hug waiting for me every game and a wonderful sense of humor. I love having Shirley as our scorekeeper.” Kirk Martin ’76 Head Coach, Women’s Basketball program apart. “Cedarville has an excellent testimony among officials and other teams,” she said, and stressed, “this is true of all the athletic teams, not just basketball. Officials love to come to Cedarville because everyone is so nice to them. It’s great to see how this reputation has materialized over the years.” Schneider herself has noticed the difference in the athletes’ demeanor off the court. She relates with pride how people in restaurants would be so impressed by the athletes’ respectful behavior that they would stop them just to ask where they were from. Schenider is pleased that her financial gifts support this unique testimony the athletic teams demonstrate, both at home and on the road. One for the Books Schneider’s relationship with Cedarville is about much more than just basketball. It’s also about her relationship with Christ. “I was saved through Cedarville,” she stated simply. To her, the Callans just seemed different than other people when they came into her dental office. In the 1960s, Schneider hired a hygienist, Carol Baker, whose husband, Ron ’69, was a Cedarville student. Together, their testimonies influenced Schneider, and she accepted Christ in the Bakers’ home, a modest trailer in married student housing. “It just kind of happened — as the Lord has so many things ‘just happen,’” she continued as she spoke of the personal significance Cedarville has had in her life. “I’m an only child and was never married. The Callans and Bakers are family, and I’m so glad I got to ‘adopt’ them.” Dr. Shirley Schneider is a member of the Yellow Jacket Club and has also served on Cedarville’s teacher education committee and the athletic hall of fame committee. She was inducted into the Cedarville University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002 and was named the University’s Honorary Alumnus in 1986, a moment she names as her “highest honor.” Sarah (Bartlett) Borich ’02 is a freelance writer and editor.
