Value Ad As vice president over account services with The Marketing Arm, Lori (Scheumann) Sutherland-Thelen ’96 has good reason to be excited about her job. Her agency was named the 2012 Promo 100 Agency of the Year by Chief Marketer magazine. The award was given in part for the work Lori’s team did for Frito-Lay in re-creating sports advertising with their “Crash the Super Bowl” campaign. The company bought ad time during the Super Bowl and turned it over to consumers, letting them create the content and reap part of the reward. Lori is now working with Tostitos to create two minutes of promotional airtime during halftime of next year’s Fiesta Bowl. One year, the company brought troops home from Iraq so one man could propose to his girlfriend; another year they presented a Habitat for Humanity home. “Our agency has an opportunity to host great events,” said Lori, “and we can use them to create a meaningful story.” Lori has an amazing opportunity to help large brands use their resources in ways that make a real difference in individuals’ lives. “I am continually amazed at where my life has taken me,” she said. “It wasn’t my plan, but God’s plan and His doing.” alumni spotlight “Our agency has an opportunity to host great events,” said Lori, “and we can use them to create a meaningful story.” Kate Roberts ’10 was the grand prize winner of the Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts Illuminating Messiaen photography competition. Her seven winning photographs correspond to the seven movements of Oliver Messiaen’s musical work, Visions de l’Ame, which inspired the competition. Kate’s work was chosen out of 125 entries. Caleb Speicher ’10 and Cynthia Hoke ’11 were married on August 6, 2011, in Elverson, Pennsylvania. They reside in Risingsun, Ohio, where Caleb is the pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, and Cindy is a registered nurse at Toledo Hospital. Blake Reeder ’11 and Bethany Wailes ’11 were married on August 6, 2011, at Christ’s Church in Bellbrook, Ohio, with a reception at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Officer’s Club. They reside in Centerville, Ohio, while they await Blake’s Army orders. Bethany is a pulmonary nurse at Miami Valley Hospital. Steven Small ’11 and Hanna Bowes ’11 were married on December 30, 2011, in Berlin, Germany, where Hannah’s parents, Aaron ’85 and Annegret (Grosse) Bowes ’87 , are missionaries. Steven and Hanna live in Columbus, Indiana, where they are both mechanical engineers at Cummins, Inc. In Memory We extend our condolences to the families and friends of these dear loved ones. Mary Elizabeth (Edgington) Crothers ’41 of Jamestown, Ohio, passed away on February 8, 2012. She attended Cedarville for three years and graduated with an elementary education degree from Central State University. She retired from teaching in Ross Township in 1977. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jim. She is survived by her siblings-in-law, Donald (Doris), Richard (Mary), and Marie; many nieces and nephews; and her devoted friends, Mrs. Mary Boeck and Miss Mary Lou Tidd.
