Inspire, Summer 2012

My best TWIRP experience was the day of culture my roommate and I planned: a trip to the Dayton Art Institute and a concert. At the art institute, we saw a painting of a target with a bull’s-eye. My date pretended to pull back a bow, took aim … and elbowed me in the eye! We are still married 18 years later. LORI JEAN (RODGERS) SMITH ’94, MINNEOLA, FLORIDA Question for the next issue: What is your favorite memory from intramural sports? Deadline for entries is September 15, 2012. The alumnus who submits our favorite answer will receive a Cedarville sweatshirt! Send your answer to Inspire, Cedarville University, 251 N. Main St., Cedarville, OH 45314, or cedarville.edu/inspire . During TWIRP week, I worked up the nerve to ask out a guy. I was brave enough to write a note, but too scared to actually send it. I threw it away. Luckily, my unit-mate picked it out of the trash and mailed it for me. My friend accepted my invitation to a Dayton Bombers hockey game, but refused to let me pay. We started dating and got married after graduation. I’ll always have my unit-mate to thank for intercepting the note that changed my life! AMY (HARNER) THOMPSON ’95, XENIA, OHIO My worst pick-a-date was when I took my date ice skating. He promptly ditched me on the ice skating rink , and pretty much avoided me all night. When we saw each other the next day, he waved and called me by the wrong name! LINNEA YOUNG ’10, DAYTON, OHIO I met my wife, Jenna (Ferguson) ’08, on a pick-a-date with her fellow Maddox RAs. At John Bryan State Park we played games, roasted hot dogs, and carved pumpkins — and talked about our shared passion for missions. Now we are finally fulfilling our dream of going to West Africa. JUSTIN DODSON ’08, CEDARVILLE, OHIO My friends and I planned a photo scavenger hunt at Meijer for our dates. Meijer employees did not appreciate our fun idea and promptly escorted us out of the store. HANNAH (DAGER) THOMAS ’00, LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY My favorite TWIRP date was when Linda Garrigan ’90 took me to The Nutcracker . It was quite an adventure sitting through my first ballet . We will celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary this year, and we still hang a nutcracker ornament on our Christmas tree each year. DAVE RYAN ’90, CANTON, OHIO My best TWIRP memory was when Lisa (Brovont) Babb ’92 and I took our friend, Brad Silvius ’92, to Michigan for the weekend — the twist being he knew nothing about the plans. After getting permission and cancelling his other TWIRP dates, we blindfolded him and put him in the car . He was a great sport, and the weekend was a lot of fun. HEATHER (ANDERSON) VANDERLAAN ’92, LANSING, MICHIGAN WINNING ENTRY! CEDARVILLE UNIVERSITY 9 overheard
