Inspire, Winter 1990

The third annual Grandparents Day at Cedarville College on November 3 attracted over 300 grandparents to visit grand- children who are students at the College. The popular event featured special recognition during Chapel, a reception with Dr. Paul Dixon and other administrators, a viewing of the College media production, campus tours, and visits to classes. On the Air," a spoof on 1940's radio, played to enthusiastic audiences at three performances. Three of the 12 new faculty at Cedarville this year are alumni. At left is Dr. Richard Blumenstock '63, assistant professor of Bible, with Dr. Kevin Sims,'74, assistant professor of political science.(not pictured: Kimberly Holliday '82, assistant professor of nursing) An Alum in Indonesia Editor Jane Adams'response to a letter from Gerri(Jue '84) Miller Gerri (Jue '84)and Jeff Miller and their sons R ecently I received a letter from a dear college friend, Gerri (Jue '84) Miller. We have kept in touch during the years, and I was able to attend her wedding in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and follow her family's preparation for a life in the country of Indonesia. I thought a life in Indonesia would be a radical change for them. Gerd had gone to Jerusalem to study at the Institute of Holy Land Studies during her junior year, but a semester of study in the historical land of the Bible is different from a life in Indonesia. After all, she had met her husband in Israel. Studying in another country for a short term meant that Gerd would return to the states, which was reassuring. Gerd and Jeff married, lived in Dallas, Texas, for several years while Jeff went to Dallas Theological Seminary, and then moved to New Jersey to accept a youth pastorate. This lifestyle seemed solid and secure to me—until 1987 when they began to talk about missions in Indonesia. After several months of travel and visiting churches and friends, they left for Java early in 1989 to attend language school. By this time they had a newborn,a two-year old,and full support. Jeff's dream was to teach in the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Indonesia(ETSI),training nationals to lead in the church. Gem's letter stated, "I just finished having another baby, packing and moving, and am in the midst of setting up a new home, encouraging my husband as he begins his dream career, all the while trying to stay sane and godly with a very loud, active two-year old and a colicky, sensitive one-month old." Gerd shared that her fears of rearing her children in a country lacking medical facilities and technology were overwhelming at times. "But the Lord abated my fears by sending an American doctor here whojust happened to want to spend his sabbatical working with my Indonesian doctor. He was a great help and comfort, and the Lord does work in miraculous ways," she wrote. Upon their move to Jogjakarta, the Miller family ran into Mike'83 and Joan(Weber'82) Wilcox. Gerd wrote,"It was really funny when I first saw them here...'Ah, you look familiar...." Mike is studying for his master's degree while they are organizing students from ETSI to work in Lombok, one of the islands. As I finished Gerri's letter, which ended with greetings to Cedarville professors,I was moved to remember the Cedarville alumni in fields of ministry throughout the world. Reminders of those who serve in their local communities also flooded my mind. 4 Winter'90 Pass the Salt I n June and July 1990,240 visitors infiltrated Utah, the Mecca of Mormonism,to deliver a carefully prepared booklet targeted to reach the Mormon people. Robert Young '87 took part in this door-to-door ministry known as Project Utah. While Robert was a student at Cedarville College, he began an intense study of Mormonism in light of biblical truth. The more he learned about Mormonism, the more the Lord burdened him for these needy people. During spring break in 1985, Robert joined other Cedarville College students in a door-to-door evangelism outreach in Utah. It was during that trip that Robert committed his life to becom- ing a full-time missionary to the Mormons. "Utah has been called America's forgotten mission field," Robert reflects. "God has burdened me to reach Mormons with the gospel message of grace. Debating with them will not accomplish that goal. It takes a ministry of love to reach people who have been deceived by a powerful religious organization." "It was especially exciting to me," Robert shared, "to return to Utah this summer, where we saw eight Mormons accept Christ as Saviour. The summer ministry was very fruitful because we were able to leave 60,000 booklets printed by Gospel Literature Services in the hands of Mormons with 7,000 responding to receive a second book about the Gospel. Project Utah also resulted in three or four people praying for God's direction concerning tentmaking ministries in Utah." A Light in the World of Acting inger Burgett'73 has spent the last 12 years working for top industries such as Xerox, General Electric, and Disney. How could she be involved with these companies? Ginger is an actress/ model and has worked hard at breaking into acting and drama. Ginger first believed that the Lord was leading her into an acting career as a ministry in 1977. Her desire to be used as an ambassador of light in the world of acting has been both challenging and rewarding. Ginger's interest in acting began during her time at Cedarville. She gives much credit to Dr.John Reed, her speech professor, who encouraged her to partici- pate in the 1970 spring drama,"The Imaginary Invalid." Ginger is grateful to Dr. Reed for giving her hope and the vision that God had blessed her with special speaking ability, especially in oral interpreta- tion. As a result of Dr. Reed's influence, Ginger chose speech as her major. Ginger finished her college training summa cum laude at the University of South Florida with a degree in speech communication and English education. After graduation, she taught speech at a large high school in Florida. She was also head of the drama department there, further sparking her interest in the art of acting. Ginger describes her present acting career as a constantjob search. Mostjobs last only a few hours Robert and his wife, Rhea(Johnson '73)and their sons,Robby 13,and Randy 12, are presently involved in their prefield ministry. They desire to inform Christians about Mormonism so that they might be effective witnesses. The Youngs desire to be the "salt of the earth" mentioned in Matthew 5:13. Challenged by this verse, the Youngs have claimed "Pass the Salt" as their prefield theme. Where better to pass that salt than in the great Salt Lake Valley? Ginger Burgett'73 or a day or two. She is often pictured in advertisements as a mom or a businesswoman. She also does commer- cials and has been a featured hostess on a cable station talk show. Credited to her accomplishments is a six-part video series for Campus Crusade for Christ. The series, entitled "Reaching Your World," will be used in churches to train laymen in evangelism. The series was directed by James Collier, well known for his work on The Hiding Place. Ginger feels that her most effective outreach is with the people with whom she works. Ginger claims "the key to ministry is living a life that is different from those of other actors—a life that is not self-serving or blown- up." Her ministry is strengthened by her pursuit of excellence on the job. Through trials and triumphs in endeavoring to be a light in drama and acting, Ginger believes that God is now opening new doors for her in films and talk shows. Wherever God does lead, her desire is to be an ambassa- dor of the light of Christ.
