Inspire, Winter 1990

After teaching for 32 years in Cedarville's Department of Languages and Literature, Mr. Harmon Bergen retired in June 1990 and enrolled as a student. The former German profes- sor, now associate professor emeritus, signs the chapel atten- dance sheet and takes undergraduate courses he believes will be interesting, useful, and fun! His retirement plans include remodeling his house and accompanying an MIS team to Germany in the summer of 1991. His wife, Audrey, former textbook manager at the College Bookstore, retired in 1989. Rev. Kimber Kauffman '80 shared Williams Hall stories and motivated many to make the most of their College experi- ence. Alumni Week Chapel Highlights I t has been a Cedarville College tradition to invite alumni to speak and to present special music during the week before Homecoming. Representing a variety of years and disciplines, these guests urged the students to continue in their study of the scriptures and testimony for God.Through their music and messages, our returning alumni shared ups and downs of MI college life, memories of life-changing propor- tion, and after-college experiences. Elaine Brown '77, assistant professor of physical education and head volleyball coach, notched her 200th career win when the varsity volleyball team beat Defiance in the Western Buckeye Collegiate Conference tournament. Alumni:the Link in Recruiting II Tim Walters'89 ow does a high school student reach the point of matriculating at Cedarville College? "The link between Cedarville and the pro- spective student," says Tim Walters '89,"is the personal touch." This personal touch is supplied by a person who intro- duces the student to Cedarville College, answers questions, encourages, and helps with the application process. And Walters says that the greatest source of recruiters Cedarville College has is the alumni. As admissions athletic coordinator, Walters has seen how effective alumni can be in recruit- ing athletes. On a regular basis, former athletes send him news clippings and tips about high school achievers. Case in point: Dozier Carter '65,former basketball great and Cedarville College Hall of Famer, came from Portsmouth, Ohio. His contacts resulted in the recruiting of Portsmouth High School state basketball champions Dominique McKinley in 1988, Craig Miller and David Barnes in 1989,and Darrel Lisath in 1990. But Walters is concerned with recruiting efforts of the College as a whole. He points out that a good alumni recruiting program will help Cedarville keep enrollments high over the next five years, when the number of college-age young people is projected to be down nationally. He is working with Director of Admissions Dave Ormsbee '78 and Director of Alumni Relations Jane Adams'84 to develop a network of alumni who will constitute an effective recruiting team for Cedarville College. The three plan to meet with potential recruiters during Alumni Weekend,February 1-2, 1991. Would you like to help? You can organize the efforts of alumni in your geographical area or you can act individually to find prospects and call them to the attention of the Admissions Office. These young people may be in your church, family,or circle of friends. They may be children of co-workers. You might read about them in Christian or secular publications. Or the Admissions Office may match you with a prospect in your geographical area and ask you to be an encourager. Admissions will send you materials--a list of answers to questions high school students ask,a recruitment video, catalog, viewbook, and an application--to help you in your role of recruit- ing. You probably will invest only an hour or two a month. Another thing you can do to promote the College and meet prospective students is to help at one of the college fairs in your area. Many high schools invite colleges to bring displays and to talk with their students about their pro- grams. The size of the Admissions staff limits the number of college fairs they can attend. But they can send materials and displays to you when you let them know that a high school in your area is having a college fair. Recruiting during the next five years will be crucial to the survival of many colleges. Cedarville College alumni can play an important role in recruiting the quality Christian students that the Lord typically calls to Cedarville. Inter- ested?
