Inspire, Winter 1992

From The Director's Chair M y oldest brother is the best gift-giver I know.Larry searches for the most creative and perfect gift to give every holiday season. He often picks up little tidbits ofa conversation when I might wish for one of those or one ofthese and he gives it as a Christmas gift. One year he made my very own scent of perfume which wejokingly refer to as the Jane line offragrance because I had remarked how much I love the smell ofgardenias and lilacs. He has been the developer of my love for flavored teas through a present which included a tea pot, mugs, sugar and creamer, and teas to taste. Larry has also been a promoter ofclassical music and ballet through his gifts to me.He also gives each family member a specialized Christmas ornament each year. Now take those gift-giving talents and multiply them by 12family members and numerous friends. He carries the same special touches to all the gifts he gives and to each person's interests. Gifts are nice, but the value increases tenfold in knowing they are from my oldest brother. The relationship we share makes the gift given that much more ofa treasure. The knowledge that my brother is a listener, developer, and promoter in my own life adds value to the gifts. I cherish our relationship and desire to imitate his skills for gift-giving. Cedarville College alumni have a special gift-giving relationship with their alma mater also. Alumni are thankful for their education, professors who took time to listen, other students who challenged their thinking, and chapel which stimulated their spiritual growth. Alumni are very creative in their giving. Whether the gifts be time, talents, advice, encouragement,or finances, the act of giving is derived from a relationship which adds to the gifts. Throughout this winter issue ofInspire, we have highlighted areas ofstewardship among the alumni and at Cedarville College. As you read,I believe you will agree that much is happening on campus and around the world as a result of many faithful contributors. The Scriptures describe stewardship as an activity which requires commitmentfrom the giver. The Bible also uses"cheerful" and "intercessor" to model the giver. As you contemplate the talents with which the Lord has blessed you,I would encourage you to be active in your relationship with Cedarville College. We need intercessors, encouragers, organizers, career motivators, and financial givers. I trust you will be challenged to share a relationship which makes the gift giving that much more of a treasure. It has been a rare occasion for our family to miss a home game in all those years. The excitement ofthe pep band, the crowd, and the thrilling play of another 20-win season brings us back time and time again. I guess you could say Yellow Jacket Basketball is in our blood. While attending some 200-plus Jacket games,I heard the term Yellow Jacket Club several times, but I did not take the time to investigate what it was all about until just a few months ago. Like me,many of you may be interested and want to find out more about the Yellow Jacket Club. The Yellow Jacket Club was established to allow friends and former athletes of Cedarville College to contribute financially to the school's athletic program. Yellow Jacket Club members primarily assist academically qualified athletes and student trainers who otherwise might not be able to attend Cedarville College. Now is the time for you tojoin the Yellow Jacket Club as I did recently! This is a great opportunity for you to have a part in a student's life and help the athletic program continue to put quality teams on the field of play. Most colleges and universities raise thousands of dollars through their athletic booster clubs. We want our Yellow Jacket Club program to play a bigger part in the overall athletic picture as we continue to grow in membership.
