Inspire, Winter 1992
est olorshi -WIRD Mark Wong,a junior information systems major at Cedarville College, recently received a Readers Digest Minority Scholarship. The scholarship assists outstanding students with a high potential for long-term success. It was one of seven awarded through The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges(OFIC)to students on OFIC- member college campuses. The son of Mr.and Mrs. David Wong of Parma,Idaho, Mark is a 1990 graduate of Greenleaf Friends Academy. Director of Library Services Lynn Brock'68 sits in a dumpster amidst a shower of cardsfrom the now defunct card catalog. This year students are accessing information from the "card catalog"through CedarNet via computers in their dorm rooms, public labs, or ten terminals in the Centennial Library. Two other colleges are using the furniture which held the old card catalog—Baptist Bible College of Indianapolis, Indiana and Southern Evangelical Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina. Career Services News T he face of the Cedarville College campus continues to change with the addition of buildings, the moving of offices, and the new computer network system. The great thing about these changes is that they are positive changes. Career Services, formerly Career Planning and Placement,is changing also. Along with the name change have come some dramatic differences in the way students register with Career Services and the way both students and alumni are served by the office. With the new system for registration the student purchases a Resume Expert packet. The packet contains two disks, one disk a tutorial and the other creating a resume. The student brings the completed data disk, including the resume,to the Career Services Office. The information is uploaded and a copy ofthe resume run. The disk is returned to the student for updating information and changing the resume. The great advantage with this system is that when employers call the Career Services office, immediate response is available. Previously, the search through paper files to try and find a candidate took days. Now we can do it in seconds and no one is left out. Attempts have been made in the past to assist alumni in job changes orjob searches. With the new Resume Expert, we can add alumni to the office database and help employers who call us forjob candidates with experience.Thejob candidates are placed into national databases that are used by hundreds ofemployers. How Alumni Can Help This past summer alumni in Ohio and Michigan were instrumental in paving the way for Dave Gaffner, director ofCareer Services,to meet with directors of human resources for their respective companies. With the current economy and the trends of diminishing company/college relations and recruiting programs, we must contact employers through personal visits or correspondence. The more contacts we make, the better the possibilities for our current students and alumni seeking employment.Career Services greatly appreciates the help ofalumni in providing Gaffner with contact names or scheduling an appointment for a personal visit. Cedarville, like many colleges, uses alumni as career consultants. Data is made available to students in regard to the major, occupation, geographic location, address, and phone number ofthe alumni. Students contact the alumni for information concerning their particular major, career, and regional employment outlook. Alumni have experience and backgrounds that provide excellent insight for college students. It is very possible that alumni may not be contacted at all, but we do want to include all Cedarville alumni in the database. In order to update your files in the college database, please complete the attached Career Services Survey and return it to Career Services Office,P.O.Box 601, Cedarville,OH 45314 as soon as possible. If you have updated your employment information during 1992,thank you. But if you have made a career change or have not updated your information, now is a perfect time. We look forward to receiving your information by January 15, 1993. Thank you for your willingness to assist the current student body at Cedarville College. 2nd Generation FRESHMEN Row 1: Amy McNiece(Buddy McNiece '73),Tricia Walker(Linda Madsen Walker'71),Dawn Allen (Donald Allen '72).
