Inspire, Winter 1992

Alumni and students will join together on December 13for the traditional presentation of Handel's Messiah in the James T. Jeremiah Chapel. This historic event focuses on alumni who participated in the Oratorio, Concert Chorale, or music courses while at Cedarville College. Alumni guest soloists are Cynthia Malley Bass'76, Ellie Dritsas Kirby '75, Peter Schroeder'71, and David Lawhead '82. Rehearsals are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, December 11 and 12, with a faculty/alumni reception following the Friday evening practice. Undergraduate Alumni Association(UAA)promotes alumni activities among the student body during the school year. At a recent organizational fair, UAA members challenged students to identify faculty, staff, and administrators in these pictures of yesteryear. Matt Brown,a senior psychology major and member of UAA got all but three right. Can you name them? Alumni Week in Chapel Kimbra Murphy'85 sang "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" for special music during the Monday morning chapel service. She teaches music in the Indianapolis Public School system. Dr. Steve Snyder'80 challenged the student body to a lifestyle of discipleship. He also spoke to Dr. Ballard's psychology class. Steve is professor of psychology at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. Jeff Beste'86 joined Bob'85 and Susan Scott Beikert'85 for Tuesday's special music. The 1991 Kingsmen Quartet provided special music for the Alumni Chapel Service on Saturday. The chapel featured a message from Dr. Dixon, prayer with Pastor Green,and the presentation of alumni awards. A professor at Westminster Seminary, Peter Lillback'74 shared the mission of Christopher Columbus in challenging the student body to win souls for Christ. Peter also pastors New Evangelical Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Special music by Jim Cato '83, director of the Christian Ministries at Cedarville. Martha Riedel'79 spoke on the importance of teaching one's children to love and honor God. Dan Riedel'77 highlighted their book, And God Said, which teaches children and adults about God's Creation. The Riedels enjoy working for their own design firm in Revere, Pennsylvania where Martha develops text and Dan creates artwork and design. The 1986 Kingsmen Quartet featured Doug Miller '85, Alan McCain '86, Tim Beach '88. Jeff Beste'86 accompanied on piano. Dr. Jim Colman, assistant professor of music at Cedarville College, performed in the Prism XII concert. Alumni sign in on the "Look Who's Here at Homecoming'92" board. Gary Coiro'85 led the charge for alumni tennis games. Over 25 alumni returned for the afternoon matches. Sherri Leeds, a senior nursing major from Vincentown, New Jersey crowned Homecoming Queen for 1992. Alumni Awards Rev. Harry Sinks'38 was named the 1992 Alumnus of the Year. Rev. Sinks graduated from Cedarville with a B.A. in secondary education English and biology. Many of his classmates remember him as the campus cheerleader. He went on to complete an M.Div. in 1972 and served as pastor of Franklin (Ohio) First United Methodist Church for many years. Rev. and Mrs. Sinks were unable to attend Homecoming.They were with their family in Connecticut where Harry officiated at the wedding of one of his grandsons. Dr. Jack Cline was welcomed into the Alumni Association of Cedarville College as the Honorary Alumnus of the Year 1992. Dr. Cline has been involved in education since he joined the faculty of The Ohio State University in 1956. Jack has served Cedarville College on the board of trustees for 32 years. His extensive work on the Academic Committee has been key in developing the strong base of the liberal arts which the College offers today. Jack and his wife, Helen, have eight children,five of whom attended Cedarville College. The Clines have 13 grandchildren. Dr. Daniel Wetzel received the Distinguished Service Award for 1992. Dr. Wetzel graduated from Morehead State University in 1955, completed his M.S. in nuclear engineering at the University of Cincinnati in 1963,and his Ph.D. at The Ohio State University in 1971. He has served for 29 years in the Department of Science and Mathematics at Cedarville College and has chaired the department for the past three years. His work on the engineering feasibility task team led to the establishment of the engineering program at Cedarville. Dan and his wife, Phyllis, secretary in the Planned Giving Office, have five children and six grandchildren. 4 Winter'92
