Edith,a faithful supporter of Cedarville College, was active in the Alumni Association. Her willingness to help with the retired educators luncheon, class reunion committees, recruiting students, and prayer support for students was exemplary. Edith was also an active member of her church,Jamestown United Methodist. The scholarship is designed to assist Cedarville College students in any discipline of study. The recipient must be a sophomore, junior, or senior; demonstrate financial need; maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or above; and intend to complete his or her studies at Cedarville College. During the 1996-97 academic year, four students received scholarships—Doug Amundson,Nathan Miller, Naomi Kossel, and Kerry Allen. Edith Clark was a tremendous student and teacher. She earned her undergraduate degree with honors in Latin,English, history, social science, and French. Her master's degree from The Ohio State University was granted in 1955. Edith taught for 35 years, retiring in 1971.The Clarks were married in June 1937 and enjoyed 57 years of marriage before Edith's homegoing in 1994. Edith gave much credit to Cedarville College for reinforcing the moral training she received from her parents. She wrote, "Attendance at chapel service was required every day ofthe week during my years at college. I felt enriched by that experience. Courses in Bible were a required part ofthe curriculum which also strengthened my spiritual life." And thanks to the Clarks' involvement in Cedarville College, those principles which were true in the 1920s and 30s remain today. Chamberlain Middle School after an educator who made an impact on students there for 35 years. Charles"Bud" Chamberlain '35 was a junior in high school when the building originally opened its doors in 1931.The Board honored Bud for more than six decades of service to this school district and the community as the building changed from junior high to middle school status. Crediting his high school English teacher for inspiring him to go into education, along with the sacrifices his parents made, Chamberlain thanked his wife, Martha, for her support throughout their 56-year marriage. Earlier this year, Bud was named Carlisle's Citizen of the Year. Born and raised in Carlisle, he served as teacher, primary school principal, baseball and basketball coach, and assistant superintendent before retiring in 1975. Chamberlain also served as the clerk- treasurer of the district. Congratulations to our very own Charles Chamberlain! While The Dixon Ministry Center is already in use, the College has until December 31 to complete the campaign for its funding and receive a $500,000 Kresge Foundation challenge grant. The Kresge Foundation will provide the final $500,000 of the campaign if others supply the balance. As the Inspire went to press, the College still needed approximately $390,000 to receive the grant. Gifts and commitments to give through 1998 qualify to meet The Kresge Foundations requirements. To date, almost 2,000 alumni have participated through direct or reunion gifts, providing over $500,000 toward the project. The College will recognize any alumnus who gives, no matter the size of the gift, on a plaque in Alumni Hall. An important element of the new Jeremiah Chapel is the Rogers 90 series organ. The instrument was dedicated on November8 during a special concert featuring organist Dan Miller. When Dan is not at work as the minister of music/organist for Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, he is publishing, performing, and recording music. Along with four CD recordings to his credit, Dan has appeared with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, the Charlotte Philharmonic, and the Florida Philharmonic. According to Dan,"It was a privilege to perform in this gorgeous facility and to show off the capabilities of this wonderful instrument." liSlithvs SIry Colleges Exclusive 4 Rankings For the second consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report ranked Cedarville College third among liberal arts colleges in the midwest region in its 1997"Best Value" rankings.
