Inspire, Winter 1999
From The Director's Chair W hen I read In His Steps several years ago,I began considering how my life would change if I truly thought about what Jesus would do in every situation. It was not only challenging and convicting, but almost mind-boggling at times. Not long after, the WWJD campaign began. At first it seemed like a good thing. What a wonderful way to remind ourselves and others to live like Jesus! However, with the commercialization of this clever idea, desensitization and even cynicism set in. Not until Littleton, Colorado's Cassie Bernall, singled out because of her WWJD bracelet, was killed for her belief in God, were we once again reminded of the significance of that simple question: What Would Jesus Do? This issue ofInspire will highlightjust a few of our alumni and members of the College family who answer this question on a daily basis. They are people who live "average" lives but choose to go above and beyond. Some live outside their comfort zones, some meet the needs of others, and some commit to give of themselves by going the extra mile. I hope you are inspired, as I was, when you read of ordinary people doing extraordinary things for the cause of Christ. Because of your continuing prayers and financial support, we are able to fulfill our mission—offering an education consistent with biblical truth. We are sure that you expect your gifts to help us achieve our goals. But do you expect your gifts to help you achieve your own goals? Well, you should. We certainly do. In fact, Cedarville College has experienced personnel to help you accomplish the following through charitable giving: •Reduce capital gain, estate, and income taxes •Prepare for your children's college expenses •Plan for retirement •Turn assets into income •Honor the memory of a loved one •Provide income for family members after your death •Ensure your estate is distributed according to your wishes, not the government's. You have demonstrated your commitment to Cedarville College. Please allow us to demonstrate our commitment to you. Call the planned giving office at 1-800-766-1115 and ask for Dave Bartlett or Kim Longo. We are anxious to show you how to use your resources to accomplish your financial, personal, and charitable goals. Name Change On The Horizon? Dave Ormsbee '78, Cedarville College vice president for enrollment management, has chaired a task team investigating the possibility of transitioning the designation of the institution from "college" to "university." "Three factors are driving this consideration," Dave said. "First, most comprehensive institutions are moving away from the use of the term 'college' and are embracing the term 'university' to refled the diversity of their programs. It appears that in the future the term 'college' will be used by institutions that offer only the traditional liberal arts degrees. The college designator no longer seems to reflect the breadth of programs and degrees offered at Cedarville." "The second factor," Dave added,"is the increasing association of two-year institutions, such as community colleges and technical training institutes, with the term. While these institutions offer excellent technical and other training opportunities for a wide variety of students, they do not operate at the baccalaureate degree level as Cedarville does. Our goal is to properly communicate who we are and what we offer through what we call our institution." "The third factor," Dave continued,"is the confusion on the international scene over the meaning of 'college.' In most places outside the U.S., the term refers to secondary institutions. For several years our ministry teams traveling overseas have used 'Cedarville University' to communicate that they come from a postsecondary institution, not a high school. And, as our international opportunities continue to expand, it seems wise to try to reduce this confusion by adopting the university designator on a permanent basis." "While the gavel has not come down on this decision," Paul Dixon, president of Cedarville College, recently said,"it appears we are moving in this direction. We are careful to point out, however, that changing our designator does not mean that we plan to change what makes Cedarville such a special place. Our emphasis on spiritual vibrancy; the 'family' environment that results from close faculty, student, and staff interaction; and the faculty priority on teaching will continue." Watch the College and alumni relations home pages for further updates on this important aspect of the continued development of Cedarville College as an institution of national and international impact for the cause of Christ. 2 WINTER 1999 Tell Us Your Story!
