Ukrainian Mission Trip A Blessing A car hijacking, food poisoning from bad borsch, and a blizzard were just a few of the adventures that Tara Wagenaar ’95 faced on her December 1999 missionary trip to the Ukraine. Yet, in a recent summary about this second missions trip to the Ukraine, Tara noted “The Lord has blessed me with a multitude of opportunities to learn more about Him and how I can serve His kingdom better. Whether through more education or my teaching job or ministries in the church, He has been faithful to show me how much He wants a relationship with me.” Tara focused on music and testimony as her two methods of evangelism on the trip. She shared musically in several Baptist churches and was even offered a job as a school music director. Tara also visited the Cherkacy prison, a public school, a children’s hospital, the Slavic Gospel Association office, the seminary, and an orphanage. The Kiev orphanage that Tara visited, called Boardinghouse #19, supports 800 children. Tara shared a special story from the orphanage: “Prior to my arrival there, I had quickly thrown in several goodie bags for gifts. I knew I did not have enough and prayed as I was memorizing 2 Corinthians 9:8-11 that God would multiply them somehow. The gifts the church team brought ran out, and my bags were opened and divided out; I was a little sad that the whole bag couldn’t be given to one child. But God knows what He is doing: I watched as a little boy received an 8-pack of crayons and opened it up and shared with his friends—have you ever seen a child light up a room with his smile because he received ONE new crayon for Christmas?!” Tara closed, “I can’t brag on God enough! He is so good! The Lord’s hand was over this entire trip, and I am in awe that He pays such close attention to me! God’s character has been clarified in my own mind and that has only drawn me closer to Him.”
