22 Winter 2001 50s Ward Weaver ’51 hit the road in October with The CenturyMen, a group of 95 singers. For nine days, Ward and his fellow travelers sang their way through Washington, D.C. and New York City. Highlights of the trip were performances on CBS’ Early Morning Show and on the east front steps of the Capitol. Sam ’56 and Ellen Smith Hornbrook ’56 have spent the last three months reporting to their supporting churches while on furlough from Veracruz, Mexico, where they enjoy serving with Baptist Mid- Missions. Ray ’59 and Jan Van Horn Reiner ’66 share that it was necessary to sell their campsite in the state of Paraiba, Brazil due to circumstances beyond their control. They are trusting God to meet their need. 60s John ’64 and Judy Marcellus Bigelow ’67 are thankful that the Lord has shown Himself strong, and they delight in His care. They have met several new people who have been a source of blessing and encouragement as they have faced many difficult situations in the past several months while in Alaska. Dennis Bellew ’65 and his wife, Frances, have relocated to New York City to help plan for the beginning of International Bible College (IBC). Dennis will serve as the dean, and Frances will serve as secretary when it opens in January 2002. IBC will be a bold program to help plant new churches in New York City and the northeastern United States, and it will prepare many immigrants for returning to their countries of origin as missionaries. Manny Pereira ’66 has retired after serving 33 years in the United States Air Force. Manny is a brigadier general and upon his retirement was awarded the Legion of Merit, the highest peacetime award. His last operational assignment was as support group commander of the 109th airlift wing that rescued Dr. Gerry Nielsen from the South Pole. Manny and his family reside in Wallkill, New York. Mark ’67 and Beth Ziegler Trimble ’67 share that the area of Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil experienced their worst dry season this year. This is true spiritually as well. The unity of the churches and growth of the work is being challenged immensely. 70s Susan Felty Mains ’79 and her husband, Reuben, are thankful for the good academic and spiritual growth in their students at Berean Christian Academy in Grenada. They praise God for the three work teams that came to help build the Grand Anse Church building during the year. Seeing that building rise from nothing has been a powerful demonstration of God’s grace. Warren ’79 and Debbie Sanderlin Throckmorton ’79 announce the birth of Levi Warren on May 29, 2001. He joins Sarah (18), Anna (16), and Emma (9) at home in Grove City, Pennsylvania. David Woodall ’79 has joined the faculty of Moody Bible Institute in the graduate school as associate professor of Greek and New Testament. David and his wife, Margot Martens Woodall ’78 , home-school their five adopted children in Zion, Illinois. 80s Ruth Yocom ’80 has recently been encouraged by the spiritual growth she has seen in the local church in Bangladesh. She praises the Lord that nine people have received Christ, that the church has started a baptism class, and that there are faithful believers who are not afraid to share their faith. Mark ’81 and Carolyn Howdyshell Hollopeter ’81 announce the birth of Joel Mark on August 6, 2001. He joins Aaron (16) and Nicole (13) at home in Galloway, Ohio. Dave ’81 and Carol Sue Cox Merkh ’82 and their children took part in the 11th annual Multiplication Jogathon for Word of Life Seminary in Brazil in September 2001. This year the proceeds went toward the computerization of the seminary library and towards the married student apartment project. Beth Landess Coffman ’82 and her husband, Michael, announce the birth of Lucas Alexander. He was born January 8, 2001 and joins his siblings, Jennifer (13), Aaron (9), and Breanna (7), at home in Springfield, Ohio. Connie Carr ’83 has been named partner in the law firm of Seeley, Savidge & Ebert Co., LPA in Cleveland, Ohio. Kellie Huddleston ’83 announced the birth of Garrison Brook on July 13, 2001. They reside in Elizabeth, Colorado. Byron ’84 and Karen Yeager Clemens ’85 announce the birth of Kaelin Elizabeth on February 24, 2000. She was welcomed home by Karissa (6) and Craig (4) in Covington, Kentucky. Todd ’84 and Carol Douglas Rivetti ’84 announce the birth of Daniel Todd on May 31, 2001. His siblings, Christina (7) and Joseph (5), awaited his arrival in Fairfax, Virginia. Pam Cook Stapp ’84 and her husband, Tom, announce the birth of Jenna Faith. She was born April 20, 2001 and was welcomed home by her sister, Emma Kate (3). They reside in Wyckoff, New Jersey. Aaron ’85 and Annegret Grosse Bowes ’87 have returned to Berlin, Germany after enjoying their furlough. They are excited about some follow-up work that came about because of two people being baptized before they left on furlough. Jon Greenwood ’85 has been named community president for Huntington Banks in the Dayton and Springfield areas. He and his family reside in Springfield, Ohio. Brad Rickard ’85 has entered the master of divinity degree program at Baptist Bible Seminary in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Becky Miller Rickard ’85 , have two children, Allison (13) and Kimberly (10). Mary Lou Kincaid Stovicek ’85 and her husband, Michael, announce the birth of Sydney Cambria Rose on June 6, 2001. Her sister, Kyra Cadence (2), awaited her arrival in Vermilion, Ohio. Jackie Wyse Jones ’86 and her husband, Michael, announce the birth of Rodney Robert on November 1, 2000. He joins his sister, Sydney (2), at home in Dayton, Ohio. Rodney was named for his grandfather, Dr. Rodney Wyse, a former business professor at Cedarville from 1961-1967. Jewel Schroder ’86 and Dwight Nordstrom were married July 1, 2000 at First Baptist Church in Brainerd, Minnesota. After a honeymoon in Hawaii, the couple returned home to Beijing, China. Jewel is the regional director for the Christian Broadcasting Network of China, and Dwight is the chairman of Pacific Resources International. Kimberly Masters ’87 and Randall Costello were married June 14, 2001 in São Paulo, Brazil. They reside in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Seth Pickering ’87 works for Compaq Computer Corporation in Indianapolis, Indiana. He and his wife, Mona Webel Pickering ’91 , have three children, Grace (5), Rachel Elizabeth (2), and Drew (1). They are members of College Park Baptist Church. Kara Ray Preston ’87 and her husband, Joseph, announce the birth of Caleb on April 18, 2000. He was welcomed home by his siblings, Heather (20), Jason (19), Candice (17), and Joshua (4). Kara manages the competitive intelligence division of the Cerner Corporation, and Joseph is a deputy sheriff. They reside in Destin, Florida. Alumnotes New Book Predicted to Define its Field Sandra Welch Harner ’64 has joined with Tom Zimmerman of GE Capital to author the book Technical Marketing Communication. Part of the elite Allyn & Bacon Series in Technical Communication, the book is expected to define the field of technical marketing communication. Technical Marketing Communication explains the role and responsibility of marketing communication in a technology-filled world. While conversational and easy-to-follow, the book provides fundamental ideas, planning tools, and real-life marketing examples. The book is already in bookstores and can also be found at www.amazon.com . Sandi has been at Cedarville since 1981 and currently serves as professor of English. She is active in the Society for Technical Communication, where she is assistant to the president for academic and research programs. She has been a consultant and freelance technical communicator since the early 1980s.
