28 Winter 2003 Alumni are a Strategic Link2CU: 500 New Freshmen Influenced by Alumni A survey of Cedarville’s new freshmen revealed that alumni referrals are one of the top five ways that students hear about Cedarville. Two-thirds of all new freshmen said that an alumnus had an influence in their choosing Cedarville, and nearly 90 percent considered the influence to be encouraging or very encouraging! Is this important? You’d better believe it! More than 500 freshmen are at Cedarville this year because of alumni like you. Alumni recommendations do far more than add students to enrollment statistics. They introduce students to an experience that will change their lives forever. Alumni know that a Cedarville education, with its focus on academic quality, spiritual growth, and ministry opportunities, pays eternal dividends. Recognizing the importance of alumni in the recruitment process, we are excited to introduce the Link2CU program. Link2CU will make it easier than ever for alumni to spread the word about Cedarville to high school students as well as to churches and schools in their area. (Link2CU is already well-known among current students who volunteer to show the University video during breaks and receive a Cedarville shirt in return.) With a click of a mouse, an alumnus quickly and easily becomes a Link2CU by: - requesting an admissions packet for a prospective student. - requesting an updated catalog, video, and poster for your church or high school. - requesting a music or drama team to minister at your church. - scheduling a time to bring students for a campus visit. - finding out more about Cedarville youth events (and registering to attend). - introducing Cedarville to your church’s youth pastor or high school guidance counselor. - showing the CU video and sharing your University experiences with high school students (and receive a free CU shirt!). Visit the Link2CU Web site at www.cedarville.edu/alumni and click on the Link2CU license plate. It’s easy to get involved, and it’s a valuable investment in your alma mater. To a high school student, your input may make all the difference in the world! Throughout her career, she found that her abilities were tremendously enhanced by the education she had received. Like many alumni, Hazel decided one day that she wanted to give something back to Cedarville University. After consulting with Dave and Kim in the gift planning office, Hazel decided that a deferred gift annuity was the perfect gift vehicle to suit her needs. This option allows her to make a gift, receive a charitable income tax deduction, and create secure income for retirement all at the same time. A charitable deferred gift annuity is a simple contract between a donor and Cedarville University. The donor makes a gift to Cedarville, and in return we agree to pay a fixed income for life to begin at a predetermined age, usually 65. The donor also receives a charitable income tax deduction. The payment rate is determined by the donor’s age at the time the gift is made and the age at which the donor wishes to begin receiving the income. Because the income is deferred, a higher rate of return can be paid out, making charitable deferred gift annuities a great way to prepare for retirement. If you are like Hazel and want to increase your retirement income by helping your alma mater, please contact the gift planning office. As a parent, you may have heard one or all of your children speak enthusiastically of him. Ed Spencer has been a familiar and much-loved face on campus for nearly 40 years. Now, why are we talking about him? Well, Cedarville is about people, and so is Ed Spencer. There’s a good chance he influenced you. Maybe someone else made a difference in your life, and you can’t imagine your Cedarville experience without that person. Think about it. Who was it? When you’ve narrowed it down, would you consider honoring that person(s) with a gift? You knew it was coming, didn’t you? But you may be wondering, “Why should I give?” For starters, think of the students here now. As tuition continues to increase, money gets tight. Your gifts help us keep our costs down, and we can continue decreasing each student’s annual tuition by $530 or possibly more. That’s right. Your gift benefits students. And, with this gesture, you can thank the person who influenced you. You’ll also be helping students who will influence others who will influence others … If you’d like to know more, please call 1-800-766- 1115 or visit www.cedarville.edu and click on “Financial Partners.” Annual Fund Office Contact Jeff Brock ’84 brockj @cedarville.edu Colorado Springs, Colorado November 1 A group of 25 alumni and friends gathered for dinner and fellowship at the Olive Garden. Amidst the season’s first snowfall, these members of the Cedarville University family braved slick roads in order to reminisce, network, and find out the latest Cedarville news from Faith Linn ’83 and Amy Cartzendafner Button ’97. Denver, Colorado November 2 The staff at the Macaroni Grill in Denver was surprised to see almost 60 locals join Faith Linn ’83 and Amy Cartzendafner Button ’97 for an alumni event dinner. However, they were thrilled to serve such a great group! One alumnus stated, “The alumni gatherings are such a blessing and encouragement to us. And they’re fun! We wouldn’t dream of missing one!” Columbus, Ohio November 7, 12, 14, 19 A series of dinners in the Columbus area brought together approximately 110 members of the Cedarville family for some great times of food and fellowship. Alumni, parents, and friends shared stories and swapped business cards as they expressed their gratitude for what Cedarville means to them. Toronto, Ontario November 20 Sixteen members from the Bible department attended the annual Evangelical Theological Society conference in Toronto, Ontario. One of the highlights was reuniting with several alumni from the area over a delicious meal at a local restaurant. Stories from the past and discussions about the future enlivened the conversation. If you live in the Atlanta area, plan on joining the Bible department for an evening reception on November 20, 2003 at their hotel! Dayton, Ohio November 26 The Cedarville University Yellow Jackets took on the Wright State University Raiders at the Nutter Center in Dayton. More than 300 alumni, students, and friends came out to back the Jackets. Although we didn’t walk away with a victory, the group enjoyed a great game and a wonderful time of food and fellowship in the Berry Room. Seattle/Tacoma, Washington December 14 This event, hosted by Camille Holloway Schuette ’95 and attended by 25 CU friends and family as well as Faith Linn ’83, consisted of a great potluck feast followed by a trip through a living nativity. What a great way to enjoy the holiday with family! Because we seek to assist as many students as possible in impacting their world for Christ through their disciplines and career strategies. We want them to give their skills as a thank-offering to God—to honor Christ through their God-valued work. For Others What is the Kingdom impact of what we do? We seek to reach a world for Christ through placement of graduates, alumni, and occasionally, a parent. We impact a world of recruiters that come to campus and see the academic and experiential preparedness of our students. We influence our literal world through Cedarville alumni (located in more than 20 foreign countries) who provide the highest level of professionalism in their individual disciplines. Forever With eternity in mind, we view 99.1 percent placement as a significant Kingdom-impacting potential. We view the 325 organizations that recruited during 2001-02 as a great long- range evangelical potential. And, we view overseas internships as a way to reach the uttermost parts of the earth with a positive Cedarville reputation and the gospel of Christ.
