Inspire, Winter 2002

Inspire 9 Heritage Corner O n Friday, October 11, a group of Heritage Alumni gathered to celebrate their 50th and 60th reunions. Those in attendance received a 50- year medallion and/or a 60-year lapel pin to commemorate this important occasion. To further celebrate these milestones, the Heritage Alumni made gifts toward a scholarship honoring Mendell Beattie, an influential former Cedarville College coach. R on Frank, a senior electrical engineering major, was recently featured in the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base newsletter Skywrighter for his work in solving a technical problem. Ron’s story appeared in the Friday, Sept. 27, 2002 issue. As a summer co-op student in the Base’s Air Sensors Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Ron found a solution to a problem that had been frustrating the Advanced Concepts Exploration (ACE) Global Positioning System research team for more than four years. The problem, according to the newsletter, was that a “bank of programmable attenuators” was “causing radio frequency ‘glitches’ in a virtual flight test simulation. … Lab researchers had tried several possible hardware fixes, but found them too costly and time- consuming to implement.” The newsletter continued, “Constructing a Programmable Attenuator Control and Test System, Ron fixed the problem in just three days, using basic logic and inexpensive integrated circuits costing about $5.” Ron and his “solution” are shown at left. Ron noted that he found his co-op rewarding and would like to find full-time employment with ACE after graduation. W hat do Billy Graham and Brigadier General Loren Reno ’70 have in common? For starters, they are both graduates of CCCU-member schools and were both highlighted on the CCCU’s Web site in the month of October. The CCCU (or Council for Christian Colleges and Universities) selected these distinguished alumni and others from 150 member institutions in order to celebrate October as Christian Higher Education Month. Loren serves as vice commander at Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center, Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. The Center provides a full range of services including overhaul and repair of bomber, tanker, and command and control aircraft, as well as various propulsion systems and other commodities. In addition, the center manages global logistics support for most of the Air Force’s commercial-derivative aircraft. Loren’s statements on the Web site revealed, “My purpose in life is to finish the course and hear the words, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’ By ‘course,’ I don’t mean one of the classes I took at Cedarville University, and I don’t mean the cross country races I ran in across Ohio and Indiana more than 30 years ago. The ‘course’ is my life, though what happened to me at Cedarville University from 1966 to 1970 had a lot to do with what I hope to hear. “Everything we did and learned at CU was in the context of what matters most in life. We prayed at the beginning of classes whether they were Bible classes or not. The basketball coach taught us to win on the court and in life. The summer basketball mission trips to Asia broadened our horizons and gave us opportunity to share what was most important to us ... our relationship with Jesus Christ. The Student Government focused on problem-solving and people- serving. The service organizations like Alpha Chi helped us grow into men of purpose and sharing. The campus radio station pointed people along “The Path.” And the daily chapel program exposed us to speakers who challenged our hearts and stimulated our thinking and commitment to live lives worthy of the ‘well done’ greeting. If I could choose again to pick a college to attend, I’d pick Cedarville (as my wife and all three children did)! It magnificently prepared me to be an Air Force general officer.” Loren and Rev. Graham’s biographies joined the Web site’s biographies of leaders such as Flight 93 hero Todd Beamer and his wife, Lisa, and U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Dennis Hastert, along with many others. Congratulations, Loren! Did You Know? The Cedarville University Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to name the Athletic Center after Dr. Don Callan ’84H. Don, who currently serves as dean of the school of health and human performance, is in his 43rd year of service to the University. Did You Know? Did You Know? The year 2002 marked the tenth anniversary of CedarNet, the campus computer network which revolutionized education at the University and made Cedarville a leading example of technology use within higher education.
