Best Leading Actress in a Play Honorable Mention for LaVaughn Ricci in Wait Until Dark Best Supporting Actor in a Play Honorable Mentions for Josh Canfield ’03 and Robert Hamilton Chestnut ’03 in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Nathan Dale Loftis in Wait Until Dark Best Supporting Actress in a Play Honorable Mention for Julianne Howe in The Miser Kathy Freese Honored by NCCAA The National Christian College Athletic Association has announced that it will honor its top women’s basketball player each year with the Kathy Freese National Player of the Year Award, named after the former Cedarville Lady Jacket head coach. Kathy coached basketball at Cedarville University from 1991 through 2001. She took three teams to the Inspire 9 Also included in the ceremony was a Scripture reading by Dr. David P. Jeremiah ’63, chancellor of Christian Heritage College in El Cajon, Calif., and son of the late Chancellor Dr. James T. Jeremiah ’73H. Chancellor Dr. Paul H. Dixon ’94H, the eighth president of the University, offered the invocation, saying “God has smiled upon Cedarville. And He has given us one exceptional president in Dr. William E. Brown.” The inauguration marked the formal beginning of Dr. Brown’s presidency, which actually began on June 1, 2003. On that date, Dr. Brown came to Cedarville from Bryan College (Dayton, Tennessee), where he had invested the previous 19 years of his life. Dr. Brown had joined the Bryan faculty in 1984 as an assistant professor for biblical studies and was named Bryan’s academic vice president and provost in 1988. In 1992, he became president and spent the next ten years leading Bryan College to new heights in spiritual, academic, physical, and financial vitality. The College began new endeavors such as a Center for Law and American Government and a worldview experience weekend outreach through his leadership. A nationally-recognized expert in worldview, Dr. Brown has authored three books on the topic ( Making Sense of Your Faith ; Where Have All the Dreamers Gone? : Observations from a Biblical Worldview ; and Making Sense of Your World with Gary Phillips). He is a prolific writer, serving as a guest columnist for WORLD magazine and writing more than a hundred articles for journals, magazines, encyclopedias, and newspapers. Dr. Brown graduated from the University of South Florida and earned his master of theology degree and Ph.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary. He holds memberships in organizations such as the Society of Christian Philosophers, the Evangelical Philosophical Society, and the Evangelical Theological Society. Dr. Brown has served on the boards of the Appalachian College Association, the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association, the National Center for Youth Issues, and The National Christian Foundation. Dr. Brown’s inauguration coincided with Homecoming weekend and included additional inaugural events, such as a reception with faculty and staff, a luncheon with special guests, a praise concert, and an alumni chapel service. NCCAA National Tournament, was once named the NCCAA District III Coach of the Year, and was the Mid-Ohio Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Jackets to a 20-11 record in 1994-95, which was only the second 20-win season in school history. Kathy remains on the faculty as an assistant professor of physical education. Dr. Don Callan ’84H, dean of Cedarville’s School of Health and Human Performance, stated, “This award certainly honors the spiritual stance Kathy demonstrated in her life and coaching. Her contribution to athletics in her tenure at Cedarville was exemplary. This is a breath of fresh air in a day when we can read any day of the vices and problems of athletes who are looked at as heroes. People like Kathy are worthy of honor and emulation.”
