Adopting a Village Cedarville University is leading the way for Christian colleges in the area ofinternational humanitarian aid,taking child sponsorship to the next level.The campus group Women ofVision(WOV),a volunteer program ofWorld Vision,is partnering with the University to adopt a village in Zambia. The Fisheni village ofZambia is an isolated community that faces challenges such as a lack ofclean water,a low literacy rate,and a high rate ofAIDS.WOV is seeking to raise $30,000 for the village this year. The Main Event "He was the biggest person I'd ever seen," said a Cedarville student when Joel Penton,defensive star for the Ohio State Buckeyes,stepped onto the stage. His size was definitely an Honoring Veterans Cedarville University honored hundreds oflocal veterans on November9in its annual Veterans Day ceremony.More than 3,000 people were in attendance for the patriotic commemoration.The program,filled with music and recognition,featured World War II veteran and POW Louis Zamperini and retired U.S.Air Force Lt. Gen. Richard V. Reynolds as speakers. Bioethics and the Bible In the midst ofsocietal wrangling over cloning,stem cell research,assisted suicide,and the environment,Cedarville University has announced the opening ofits new Center for Bioethics.The Center's director,Dr.Dennis Sullivan, professor ofbiology,explains,"The purpose ofthe Center for Bioethics is to teach students to understand bioethical issues from a biblical perspective and to engage and influence the broader American culture." Louis Zamperini Honor to Whom Honor is Due Smart Breaks Scoring Record Brittany Smart'07 became the school's all-time scoring leader in women's basketball on November 3while leading the NAIA Division II No.2 Lady Jackets to a 68-56 victory over No. 13 Bryan College.The senior guard from Springfield,Ohio scored 31 points to run her career total to exactly 2,300 points,which broke the previous record of 2,275 set by Kari Flunker'05 from 2001-05.The only CU player to score more points than Smart, a two-time NAIA All-America First Team selection,is former Yellow Jacket men's player Eric Mounts'81,who tallied 2,648 points from 1977-81. Brittany is the daughter ofMike'82 and Elaine Riggs Smart'82 and the granddaughter ofJack and Joyce Riggs. Women's Cross Country Kudos Samantha Maat '07,Elisabeth Pyles'09,and Nicole Santos'09 produced All-America efforts to lead Cedarville to a runner- up finish at the NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championship in Louisville,Kentucky on November 18. It's the highest finish for the Lady Jackets since winning the NAIA title in 2001.The three also earned All-America honors the previous week at the NCCAA National Championship,which was staged for the first time at the Elvin R.King Cross Country Course. The Lady Jackets won their sixth NCCAA banner by outrunning 21 other schools.Lydia Wong'10 and Audree Goodew'08 also picked up NCCAA All-America recognition. Elvin King'64 was tabbed NCCAA National Coach ofthe Year. Women's Volleyball Honors The NAIA No.25 Lady Jackets finally toppled No.16 Walsh in the NAIA Region IX-X volleyball championship match on November 18 to earn their third straight trip to the NAIA Nationals.In the national championship,the Lady Jackets played courageously but dropped their final two matches.In the NCCAA,the Lady Jackets won the national title for the second straight year after producing a perfect 6-0 record in the 10-team event at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Julia Bradley'07 and Sarah Zeltman'08 were named to the NCCAA All-America Team while Melissa Hartman'96 was selected the NCCAA National Coach ofthe Year. CU Named to President's Community Service Honor Roll Cedarville University has been named to the first-ever President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The University was selected for a demonstrated commitment to community service and hurricane relief.A full list ofthe honored schools is available at www.nationalservice.gov .
