New Biblical Heritage Gallery Exhibit Another Successful Library Book Sale Textbooks on Reserve Survey Results Newsletter Highlights Library Student Staff Recognitions Centennial Library Scholarship Winner Announced View Online For centuries, prior to the invention of printing in the Western world, the text of the Bible was preserved in manuscript form. From the hand-copied manuscripts of the post-New Testament and Medieval periods to the handcopied Bibles of the early Reformation period, the text of Scripture was preserved by God to assure that the Words of God--his plan, principles, and purposes--would be accessible to man created in His image. Centennial Library E-News Proceeds from the sale were split with 40% allocated to the Don & Julie Deardorff English Scholarship and the remainder to the Centennial Library Alumni Scholarship in Library Science. MARCH/ APR I L 2022 VOLUME 29 NUMBER 4 Library Exhibit on Bible Manuscripts Print on Reserve Survey Most students find reserves easy to use though some report uncertainty Most students use reserve textbooks in addition to purchasing personal copies of the same textbooks, though some use reserve textbooks instead of purchasing personal copies Textbooks on reserve are not publicized enough in advance for students to know whether or not a book is on reserve at the library This January, the library surveyed students about their use of print textbook reserves at the library. These are course textbooks that can be used in the library for limited times. Over 140 students responded, allowing us to draw some conclusions about our textbook reserves: This gives us some clear goals: to improve awareness and visibility of textbook reserves, enhance search functionality and guidance, and develop a better workflow management process so we can ensure students are able to evaluate library reserves when making textbook decisions. The Centennial Library’s current Biblical Heritage Gallery exhibit “Preserved by Hand: The Bible from Manuscript to Gutenberg” presents examples of manuscript portions of the Bible from the 1st to the 15th centuries. You can explore this history from the Dead Sea Scrolls to the first printed Bible, either in-person at the library or online. Edited by Ched Spellman, Assoc. Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies & Jason Lee, Professor of Theological Studies The Seminary as a Textual Community: Exploring John Sailhamer's Vision for Theological Education, Fontes Press. 2021. John Sailhamer (1946-2017) is known for his careful scholarship on the Hebrew Bible and his focus on the compositional strategies found in the text of Scripture. Perhaps less well-known is his comprehensive vision for theological education. In part one of this volume, editors Ched Spellman and Jason K. Lee present a previously unpublished address from Sailhamer on "The Nature, Purpose, and Tasks of a Theological Seminary" and offer a reflection on the setting, substance, and significance of this new work. Part two includes a collection of Sailhamer's articles, essays, and reviews that are less-well known yet relate to some of the major topics he develops in his proposal for theological education. These writings focus on the use of history and hermeneutics with an eye toward the nature of biblical narratives. This section also includes some of Sailhamer's interaction with works from several different disciplines (from biblical exegesis to systematic theology) as well as his reflections on the state of Old Testament studies. The volume ends with a comprehensive bibliography of Sailhamer's writings and research. Most importantly, readers will learn how God used tragic events in Patrick’s life to bring him to Christ. This book will inspire and encourage kids in their own walk with the Lord. Patrick’s life teaches valuable lessons such as trusting in and depending upon Christ, prayer, and being a witness for Christ.
