Centennial Library Shelf Life, November/December 2024

Long-time Faculty Retires In 1995, Jeff completed his Master of Library Science degree at Kent State and later earned a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Faith Baptist Theological Seminary. Reflecting his longstanding interest in the Christian dimensions of librarianship, Jeff contributed a chapter to the book The Faithful Librarian, a collection of essays exploring the library profession through a Christian lens. Jeff was an active member of the Association of Christian Librarians, regularly attending the annual conference, frequently as a presenter. In his role at Cedarville, Jeff provided research support to students taking Bible or theology courses as well as students in general education courses. Jeff enjoyed digging deeply into research questions, discussing how Christianity and librarianship intersected, and thinking through models of research and scholarly inquiry. Among his colleagues, Jeff was known for his self-effacing humility, his passion for sustained reflection, and his deep love of puns. Jeff and his wife Charlotte are long-time members at Dayton Avenue Baptist Church in Xenia and both have served in multiple ways there. Long-time library employee Jeff Gates retired at the end of the 2023-24 academic year, completing 17 years of service at the library. Jeff served as Information Services Librarian and as the library liaison to the School of Biblical and Theological Studies. He had been at Cedarville in that role since 2007. Previously, Jeff had served as Head Librarian at Faith Baptist Bible College and Seminary in Ankeny, Iowa and as a pastor in Kearney, Nebraska. Library Careers Student Presents at Conference Senior Linguistics major Justin Kemp presented a lightning round session at the Academic Library Association of Ohio annual conference in Dublin, Ohio, on November 8, 2024. His presentation “Bilingual Picture Books in the Curriculum Materials Center: Equipping Education Students for Multilingual Classrooms” included tips for librarians who want to expand their collections in the three categories of bilingual picture books he discovered. The presentation was part of Justin’s Linguistics Special Topics course, Multilingual Libraries, under the direction of Professor Julie Deardorff. Justin will also be the keynote speaker at the 18th annual Library Careers Dinner on November 18, when he will share about his summer 2024 international library experience with Open Door Libraries (New International) missionaries in Berlin and Prague.
