Prima composed several “Italian novelty” songs that infused the tarantella into elements of jazz, while also singing lyrics that reflected his Italian upbringing in an exaggerated Italian accent. The majority of these songs were created shortly after World War II, when there was still a significant degree of anti-Italian sentiment in the United States. The manner in which Prima’s music countered this sentiment was unique: instead of attempting to glorify and legitimize his cultural heritage, he amplified Italian stereotypes through humorous self-deprecation. The popularity of Prima’s Italian novelties prompted a reevaluation of Italian culture in America, replacing images of violence with reverberations of joy. The Tarantella The tarantella is a folk dance native to the southern half of the Italian peninsula. The music for tarantellas comes in many forms across Italy’s southern regions, but is unified by fast and erratic compound rhythms played by the tambourine. Other notable instruments include the accordion and mandolin, which provide harmony to this primarily rhythmic style. The signature compound rhythm (see Example 1) accompanies one or more dancers who move in a uniquely unstable style, ranging from shuffling their feet across the floor to crossing their legs while hunched over. In many cases, the instrumentalists and the dancers compete to tire each other out, however most modern performances are more casual in nature, especially at family gatherings. I
