The Star-Spangled Girl

f f rom the SSramtUurg What is physical attraction? “It’s when one hippopotamus likes another hippopotamus with no questions asked.” — Andy, The Star-Spangled Girl Love is a funny thing. We can fall in love with someone because of his or her eyes, smile, or even smell. We fall in love for all the right and wrong reasons. But, then we fall out of love for the same reasons we fell in love. In The Star-Spangled Girl, the instant Norman meets Sophie, he is in love. He is determined to win her affection. Sophie, however, isn’t too keen on the idea. With each crazy thing Norman does, it only pushes her further away. Sophie also can’t stand Norman and his friend Andy’s political ideals. She is an all-American young woman. She loves apple pie and can sing all the stanzas to the Star-Spangled Banner. Andy and Norman stand for anti-establishment and critiquing the old-fashioned American way of life. It’s not only a fight for love, but a fight to prove who the true American really is. So, is it possible to love someone based on physical attraction alone? What happens when the person you love doesn’t share your same ideals? The Star- Spangled Girl is a delightful blend of love and politics that results in all sorts of funny happenings. Sit back, laugh, and enjoy the show! — Samantha Sumler, Dramaturg PLAY ON WORDS, a study guide, has been prepared by the production dramaturg and is available without charge at the concessions booth in the theatre lobby.
