Torch, Spring 1987: Centennial Issue
Steven H. Hayes The product of Cedarville Col– lege is its graduates. Steve Hayes ('80) is Manager, General Accounting, Diamond Elec– tronics Inc. in Lancaster, Ohio. Steve says of his experience at Cedarville: "It totally changed my life. Through the impact of chapel, classes, the example of spiritual friends and faculty, I was able to commit my life to Jesus Christ without reservation. "My Christian service helped me to look on myself as a leader rather than one who passively sits in the pew. This has carried over to my being actively involved in local church ministries since college. Serving as a personnel assistant in the dorm gave me my first experience at managing people - a practical application of biblical principles I was learn– ing in my business classes. I realize how important those prin– ciples are now that I have people under my leadership. "When I went to Indiana Uni– versity for my MBA, I found that my education in business admin– istration at Cedarville College equaled or exceeded that of my classmates who had attended prestigious universities all around the country. "I continually have had to make decisions of a moral and ethical nature. At Cedarville I learned to evaluate situations and to make decisions from a Christian per– spective." Cedarvi!le College is commit– ted to building into lives of students, and Steve Hayes is an example. 26 "Never before have Christian institutions been so scrutinized for fiscal responsibility. At Cedarville we consider this a sacred responsibility." increase from 3,000 to 30,000 watts. This will ensure a stronger signal throughout the greater Dayton area and even to Cincinnati. The station broadcasts into Richmond , Indiana, via a trans– lator, and new translators have made our Christian radio programs available to Portsmouth and Chillicothe, Ohio. Neve r before have Chri stian institutions been so scrutinized for fiscal responsibility. At Cedarvill e we consider thi s a sacred responsibility. I am happy to announce that the college ended its 1985-86 yea r in the bl ack once agai n. This was made possible as God led friends like you to fill in the gap between tuition , fees, room, and board dollars received from students and our $ 11 .7 million budget. Gifts totaled nearly $2 million , a six percent increase over the previous year. Part of this was an 11 percent increase in giving to the general fund by alumni . Expe nditures for 1985-86 were: $3 ,693,962 Instruct ion and Academic Support 3,592,463 2,367 ,617 I , 199,600 867, 119 Receipts for 1985-86 were: $6,558,252 1,835,097 1,573, 187 $9,966,536 Administrative and Institutional Service Aux iIiary Services Debt Service Physical Plant Tuition and Fees Board Room Total Thi s total represented 67% of all college revenues. Gifts increased by 6%. Giving highlights were: $733 ,000 to capital projects and a record $645,000 to the general fund . It was a good year in so many ways, for which I rejoice. Yet I will never forget the sadness that settled over our campus with the tragic deaths of four of our students - one in December, one in February, and two in Apri I. The spec ial memorial service held in the chapel on May I became a media event as telev ision , radio, and the print media converged on Cedarville to report our grief. Yes, they saw the tears, but they also saw the hope of Christians who know that eternal life awaits those who compl ete their mini stry on thi s earth. A powerful witness was given to thousands of people throughout the state of Ohio, and I believe we all became a little closer as a college family. Thank God for Chri sti an higher education! I cannot imagine how poor our world would be without the influx of bright , skilled, and godly men and women who graduate from fine Christian schools. Cedarville College has been a part of that process for I00 years. And we look forward with enthusiasm and anticipation to our second century of providing excellent Christian education for the Word of God and the Testimony of Jesus Christ.
