Torch, Spring 1987: Centennial Issue

An Investment in My John Bercaw, an accounting mqior at Cedarville College, stands before the nearly completed $4 .2 million library slatedfor occupancy this autumn. John and his 500 fellow business majors lookforward to the retrofit ofthe old library into a state-of-the art business building . Hi! I'm John Bercaw, an accounting major at Cedarville College. I came to Cedarville expecting to work hard at my studies and, believe me, I have. I've spent a lot of time studying and doing research at our library. It's been a challenge , but not always as a result of my assignments. Sometimes, especially during finals, it's been hard to find a seat! You see, this current library was built in 1967 for a student body of 800. Today there are over 1800 of us! It was constructed for a collection of 33,000 volumes. I'm told we now have over 111,000 ' squeezed onto the shelves . As books have been added, seating has been reduced. Some of our students go to area colleges with larger libraries in order to study in a less crowded environment. They are often able to find a greater selection of resource materials in those libraries, too. However , there is good news! 30
