Torch, Spring 1987: Centennial Issue

Future.... Cedarville College is building a new Library, and it's going to provide many advantages for the Cedarville College family. At nearly 67 ,000 square feet , the new Library will be almost as large as our Athletic Center. In addition to expanded fac ilities for the media resource center, the curriculum materials center, and the faculty development center, the new Library will include a video lab, media auditorium , language lab, and group study rooms. Construction should be completed this spring, and we' ll be able to use the library fall quarter 1987. Since I' m presently a junior, I' ll be able to use the new Business Corporate Learning Center which will be located in the remodeled old library . This 27 ,000-square-foot building will be ready next fall , too , and will house 12 classrooms, 18 fac ulty offices , and a business simulation laboratory. Plans call for computer support in every classroom and office . It's exciting to see the progress on the new Library. I realize, though, that it takes a lot of money to provide us with such a quality facility - about $4 .2 million. Thi s is where you, the fri ends of Cedarville College, come in. We need your help. For 30 months the college has been quietly raising funds for the Library. And , pra ise the Lord , well over $3 million has been received in cash and commitments. That's great, but we still need the remainder. Never before has there been such an interest in the quality Christian education offered here. Over 10,000 people visit our campus each year. For the last eight years our enrollment has increased. Programs have expanded dramatically, and faculty have been added. This compounds the need for a new, larger, state-of-the-art library. That's what we' ll have soon, with your assistance . Would you prayerfully consider helping Cedarville help us? Your gift to the college for the new library will be an investment in my future and in the futures of all the students who will choose Cedarville for their preparation to serve the Lord . We would be very gratefu l. Gifts to Library reach $3.2 million $4.2 million $3 .2 million "Old Fred" A number of institutions reach their 100th birthday. Only a few individuals reach that great age. One of these was "Old Fred" as he was known by the staff of the nursing home where he lived. Nobody could remember how long he had been there, but the personnel had helped him cele– brate his centennary two years before. Each Sunday afternoon a group of people from the local church came to the nursing home to offer a time of worship for the residents. The attendants always wheeled Old Fred along with the other residents to the large social room for the service. The visitors presented a short Bible message, some special music, and led those who cared to in song. They always presented the plan of salvation, too, and asked if anyone would like to receive Jesus Christ as Savior. No one ever did. And Old Fred just sat and dozed in his chair. On a particular Sunday, one of the visitors from the church was there for the first time. She didn't quite know what to do, so she quietly observed the residents during the service, and while a co-worker presented the Gospel, she prayed fervently that God would save one of the residents that day. When the co-worker asked if anyone would like to receive the Savior, Old Fred opened his wat– ery blue eyes and said in a quav– ery voice, " Yes, I believe I would." No one could remember how long Old Fred had been in the nursing home. But they all re– member the occasion of his spiritual birthday. For the remaining days of his life, when Sunday afternoon came, he would urge the other residents with a wave of his arm and a cheery, " Come on, it's time for church! " Friend, you may never cele– brate a 100th birthday. But you can certainly have a spiritual birthday one year from now. When you receive Christ as your Savior, you also receive a new birth. Ask God to forgive you of your sins and to become your Lord and Savior. " ...if you confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness ; and with the mouth confession is made urito salvation" (Romans 10:9,10).
