Speech And Debate Competitions The forensics team (pictured above) finished second in statewide competition . The first place team from Miami University is coached by Cedarville graduate and former forensics team member Jeff Joiner. The college debate team participated in six two-day intercollegiate debates , winning two and attaining second place or at least quarter-finalist standings in the rest. Debate coach Deborah Haffey, associate professor of communication arts, served on the topic selection committee for the National Education Debate Association which consists of 50 member schools. Assisting with the debate team is Rebecca Calvert, instructor of communication arts. Faculty Retirements Ar the end of the 1995-96 academic year, Dr. Allen Monroe, professor of social science, retired after 31 years of full-time teaching responsibilities at Cedarville College. Following one year of teaching part-time, he and his wife , Dr. Beverly Monroe, who also retired, plan to move to the home they are building in Brevard, North Carolina. He taught Foundations of Social Science and geography courses at the College. Mrs. Monroe, associate professor of education, came to the College in 1977 as a children's literature specialist. She has presented in-service instruction for teachers in Christian schools in Taiwan, Philippines, and China, and in her retirement plans to assist overseas Christian schools in setting up libraries . Professor Pat Dixon, associate professor of English and wife of Dr. Paul Dixon, retired from the faculty as well. She joined the Cedarville faculty in 1971 . Having earned Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certification, Mrs. Dixon Jed the first TESL Missionary Involvement Service (MlS) team to Hungary. Her special interest in Cedarville graduates who are teaching English in China has resulted in several visits to that country. Mrs . Dixon was appointed assistant to the president for institutional enhancement by the Board of Trustees and will remain active on the campus in her new role . The three professors were granted emeritus status. Hall Of Fame Inductees The College recently inducted four new members into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. They are Eric Fillinger, a 1990 graduate who was a six-time NAIA All-American distance runner in track and cross country; Dr. Pamela Johnson, women's tennis coach and NAIA national women 's tennis tournament director; Betty Bertschinger, who founded and served for over 25 years in Cedarville's sports medicine program; and author and sports editor David Branon, a 1973 Cedarville graduate.
