2 Torch Clarifying Our Vision he importance of goals in life cannot be overstated. Deciding where you want to go and determining the most appropriate route are fundamental to any accomplishment. Vision is much more than goal-setting, however. Having a vision means not only knowing where you want to go and the best means of getting there—it also means knowing why the destination is important. Scripture tells us that “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). Various translations use phrases such as “the people are unrestrained” and “the people cast off restraint” to describe the result of a lack of vision. The writer of Proverbs paints a picture of societal confusion, disorganization, and chaos. I think this can also be applied to institutions, meaning that any organization without a vision ... or any institution with a muddled vision ... is at best spinning its wheels and at worst deteriorating into shambles. Is there any better description of our own nation in general and many of our elite educational institutions in particular than one of aimlessness and disorder? Our vision at Cedarville is to be the higher education institution of choice for Christian young people and their parents in the 21st century. We want to provide an alternative perspective—not just on education, but on all of life—through a truly higher education. To achieve this vision, the institution must remain true to its mission of providing an education consistent with biblical truth. That, of course, means everything we say and do must be evaluated by its relationship to the Word of God. The reason the destination is important? Because our ultimate intent is to do only that which brings glory and honor to the name of our Savior. Exalting Him to His rightful place in our educational system and our society is truly a vision worth pursuing. As you read this issue of , remember that it is primarily through both the financial and prayer support of friends of the University, such as yourself, that the Cedarville vision will be realized. God has always accomplished His ways on Earth through men and women of faith and action. Won’t you consider how God would have you play a part in His enterprise here at Cedarville? Be a part of the vision. Our vision at Cedarville is to be the higher education institution of choice for Christian young people and their parents in the 21st century.
