Music Faculty Giving ofThemselves to Better Others Music faculty should have one footfirmly planted inside the institution and one foot outside in the performance arena; most of us are, in fact, performing artists at some level. Because we live in two worlds,so to speak, we feel pulled in two different directions. Frankly, there's more money to be made in perfor- mance, but the thing that keeps us teaching is the ministry of discipleship we have with you -- multiplying our effectiveness Mrs.Rodgers by reproducing ourselves in the lives ofour students. The way weteach musicisadirectcontinuationoftheoriginal university concept:the Magister (Masterteacher)impartsthe art and craft of music to the Discipulus (student-disciple) in a relationship more akin to an apprenticeship than it is to the classroom method. It's a very special application of the Great Commission,to makeindividual disciples and modelthe Chris- tian life before them. •Charles R.Clevenger,DMA Music Department Chair Photo By Jesse Wesselink Fine Arts \'115
