Ben Bird and Todd Wiersma, both freshmen, put forth All- Americaneffortsinthespring.Bird won NAIA and NCCAA honors while Wiersma joined his class- mate as a winner in the NCCAA event. Bird wastheJacketslone NAIA All-American when heplaced sec- ond in the discus competition at the national meet in Abbotsford, British Columbia. His runner-up heave measured 164-feet9-inches. Bird won both the discus and shot put events at the NCCAA National. He had a throw of 155- feet even in the discus while his winning mark in the shot put was 51-feet 7 1/2-inches. Wiersma wonthejavelincompetition witha throw of 179-feet7-inches. Cedarville College hosted the firsteightNCCAA national meets everstagedfrom1973through1980 and theYellowJacketsreturned as host of the 21st annual men's event with head coach John McGillivray serving as meetdi- rector. TheJacketsfinished sec- ond out of 16 teams with 88 points. Anderson easily won the title with 156 points. Cedarville also hosted the 43rd AnnualMid-OhioConfer- ence championship and placed second out of four schools. Seven Yellow Jackets earned spotsontheall-conferenceteam led byTodd Wiersma,whowon the 110 meter hurdles, high jump,long jump, and was on the winning 400 meter relay team. Other relay members wereJamesGoins,DarrylHam- mock,and Steve Barr,who also won the 400 meter dash. Ben Bird swept the discus and shot put event while Jon Plush was victorious in the pole vault. AttheNAIADistrict22meet, Cedarville finished fourth out ofsix schools.
