The Lady Jacket tennis team closed out its inest season in school history by finishing in tie for 21st place out of 48 schools at the 4AIA National Championshipsin Overland 'ark,Kansas. Cedarville won the NAIA Dis- rict22crownfor thefourth straighttime and lso repeated asMid-OhioConferencecham- )ions under head coachPam Diehlwhocom- >leted her 17th year at the helm. Thefive matches won at the nationaltour- tament were the mostsince Ann Berger won hree matches herself in 1983. This time round,Melissa Hartman,Lynette Cruz,and :innamon Brown all picked up first round rictories in singles. Doubles winners in the Teninground included the reamsof Angela Hartman and Paula Triplett plus Cinnamon Brown and Cindy Gannon. The LadyJackets advanced to the national tournament after an impressive showing in the District22tournament. The women won four of the six singles. Flight winners were Angela Hartman,Melissa Hartman,Lynette Cruz,andCinnamonBrown.AngelaHartman and Paula Triplettwonthetop doublesflight; Melissa Hartman and Julie Seaman claimed the numbertwoslot,whileCinnamon Brown and Cindy Gannon were winners at third doubles. Five Lady Jackets were voted to the All- NAIA District22team. The Hartman sisters earned the honorin bothsinglesand doubles; Cruz wasselected in singles,and Seaman and Triplett were both named in doubles. Brown,Cruz,Gannon,and Seaman all completed theircareersin the LadyJacket program. Brown had the best singles record this year at 13-1 and had a career 23-5 mark. She teamed up with Gannon for an 8-1 doubles record. Cruz was 11-2 during the year and 39-7 for her career while Seaman had a slate of 34-20 in her four years. Cedarvillealso placed threeathleteson the prestigious NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete team. Cinnamon Brown, Angela Hartman,and Julie Seaman were allselected. Tobeeligible,anathlete must be at least a junior or senior varsity per- former, been enrolled at the nominating institution a minimum of one term,and must have at least a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale. BrownalsobecamethefirstLadyJacket tennis player to be named to the GTE Academic All-District IV at-large team as selected by the College Sports Informa- tion Directors of America. The at-large team considers athletes from all sports, with the exception of volleyball, basket- ball, and softball, who are sophomores, juniors,or seniors with at least a 3.20 cu- mulative grade pointaverage. DistrictIV includesallNAIA,NCAADivision II,and NCAA Division IIIschoolsin the states of Alabama,Kentucky,Michigan,Ohio,and Tennessee.
