Aftergraduating fourstarters whocombined toscoremorethan6,000 points in their respective careers, head coach Don Callan entered his 34th year at the school simply hoping to assemble a competitive team that could finish with a winningrecord. Theresultwasa21-15 mark,which was the seventh straight 20-win cam- paignfor the Yellow Jackets,and theirfourth trip to the National Christian College Athletic Association tournament wherethey placed fourth. "Wehad so manyquestion marksatthebegin- ning of the season we really did not know what to expect," said Callan,who is the second winningest activecoachintheNAIA withacareerrecord of558- 412."Manyofouryoungplayersdevelopedquicker than anticipated and that was the key. This team matured as the season progressed." The Yellow Jackets did not have a senior on the team and the top two scorers weresophomores JeffBradleyandBobbyPolack,whobothtransferred to Cedarvillethe previous year. Buttheteamleader was junior captain El Seabra who averaged 17.3 pointsand 7.4rebounds per game. ThePortuguese native was named to the NCCAA All-Tournament team,the All-Mid-Ohio Conference first team,and totheAll-NAIA DivisionIGreatLakesRegionteam. Bradley,a 6-6 shooting forward from Ports- mouth,Ohio,led the MOCin scoring at23.7 points pergame. Hetopped 30pointsin agamefive times, which included a pair of39-point efforts,and scored a school-record82three-pointgoals. Heearned spotson the NCCAA All-American second team,the All NAIA Division I Great Lakes Region team as well as the All- MOCsecond team. Possibly the biggest surprise camefrom the 6-5 sophomore center Bobby Polack. He averaged 19.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game despite having practically no organized basketball experience while growing upin Jamaica. Junior guard Josh Rangjoined Seabra in starting all36gamesand averaged5.7assists pergame. Hewas alsooneofthetopfreethrowshootersintheMOCat79.3 percent. Callanreceivedimportantcontributionsfromsev- eral other players. Junior forward Matthew Reynolds stepped in at mid-seasonand started 20games.
