Women Jackets Win NCCAA Track Title Cedarville College won its third National Christian College Athletic Associationwomen'strackandfield title while the Yellow Jacket men finished second in their division to highlight the outdoor season. Ce- darville served as host of the 22nd annual men's event and the 14th annual women's championship. The Lady Jackets totalled 145 points to run away from the 14- school field. Defending champion Huntingtonfinishedsecond with125 points. ItwasthefirstNCCAAbannerfor the women since winning back-to- back titles in 1985 and 1986. First- yearcoachPaulOrchard wastabbed NCCAAWomen'sCoachoftheYear and junior Stephanie Sherman was presented the Wheeler Award as the outstanding female track and field Athlete of the Year in the NCCAA. Shermanclaimedindividualtitles in the triple jump (38-2 1/4), long jump (18-7 1/4), and 100 meter hurdles(15.3)tobecomeafive-time NCCAA champion. Other Lady Jacket winners were Courtney Kilburn in the discus (123-5), JuliannePletcherinthe5,000meters (18:52.6),andJenniferZennerinthe 800 (2:17.01). Zenner was also namedanAll-AmericaScholar-Ath- leteinboththeNCCAAand NAIA. TheYellow Jacket men narrowly missed out on their fifth NCCAA banner. Indiana Wesleyan claimed the title with 100 points,Cedarville had 96, and Taylor finished third with 90. Joe Cunningham paced the men by winning both the pole vault (15-8)and javelin (159-9)competi- tions. Pete Simons was the only other Yellow Jacket winner by tak- ing the 5,000 meter run(15:17.41). CedarvilleCollegehad three All- Americans(top six finishers)from out ofthe NAIA NationalOutdoor Championships in Azusa, CA. Sherman finished second in the women's triple jump with a school record leap of40-feet 101/4-inches to earn NAIA All-America honors fortheeighthtimein her career. On the men'sside,Chad Ederwasthird in the 5,000 meter race walk(21:33) whileJoeCunninghamfinishedsixth in the pole vault(15-11 3/4). Themen'steamwontheMid-Ohio Conference championship and the women weresecond. In NAIA Dis- trict 22 competition, the women placed second while the men fin- ished fifth. During the winterindoorseason, Stephanie Sherman was an All- American attheNAIA Nationalsby finishing second in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump. Fresh- man Michelle Burson also earned All-America honors by placing fourth in the two-mile run. *Mark Womack With outstretched arms Stephanie Shermanjumps using all her strength.
