The schedule named them -- for lack of a better title -- "Steve Wintle and Friends." They allknew they didn'twanttogobythat,butno onecould think ofa better name.Suddenly,someone walked by wearing a had with "Carpe Diem" written on the front. "Somebody saw it and said,'That's it! Carpe Diem!" Carpe Diem,self-described,is"a bunch of people who are learning to play jazz on their own." They work indepen- dently from any other group, assisted in publicity by Mr. DiCuirci and Mr.Pagnard,who describe Carpe Diem affec- tionately as "self-starters." Referring to the Thessalonian church, the group explained that they don't have a head. "We're all just arms and legs," stated Todd Davis. The1994band consistsofBrian Megilligan,MichaelLeshan, Todd Davis,and Steve Wintle,seniors. Jeremy Washburn,a sophomore,backsthem uponthe drums. MartySimonsand Chris Pagnard have also helped in the past. Steve says of Jeremy, "He's easy to work with; he does a good job of playing." Every member feels their musical skills have im- proved since they began playing together. BesidesCedarvilleCollegechapels,CarpeDiem hasplayed atseveralchurchesand even ata youth rallyin Indianapolis. The secret of their music? They play from books of basic melodies that generations before have played but with their own unique jazz style and harmony.
