1994 Women's Cross Country Review The Cedarville College women'scrosscountry team enjoyed its finest season ever in 1994 which culminated in a ninth-place showing at the NAIA National Championships. The Lady Jacketscapturedfiveteam titles,includingtheMid-OhioConfer- ence championship,and placed second at the NCCAA Nation- als. The women were winnersin theclassroom as well. They had the second-highest team grade point average (3.72) of all 35 teams at the NAIA national meet. Sophomores Michelle Burson and Julianne Pletcher formed Cedarville's one-two punch from start to finish. They became Cedarville'sfirst-ever NAIA women'scross country All-Ameri- cans(Top30finishers)as Burson placed 26th and Pletcher was 27th. Theyflip-flopped thetoptwospotsattheNCCAANation- als and Mid-Ohio Conference championships. Burson took the NCCAA title whilePletchercopped theMOCcrown which was the only time Burson did not finish as the team's top runner during the season. Thesophomore duoeach ran their fastesttimes ofthe season at the NCCAA national meet which was staged in Rochester, New York. Burson toured the 5,000 meters in 18:31 while Pletcher finished in 18:35. They were joined by three other teammateson the All-America squad(Top 15finishers). Senior JenniferZennerwasninth,juniorHeatherCorneliusplaced 12th, whilefreshmanBeccaJenkswas14th.SophomoresKaraMalone and Jill Zenner rounded outthe team's top seven runners. Jennifer Zenner earned spots on the NAIA and NCCAA All- AmericaScholar-Athleteteamsfor thesecond consecutive year. Membersoftheteamarejuniorsorseniorswhocarryaminimum cumulative 3.50 GPA and make a solid contribution to the varsityteam. Zenneralso garnered thecoveted WheelerAward astheNCCAA'soutstandingfemalecrosscountry Athleteofthe Year. Besides winning the MOC title, Cedarville picked up team invitationalchampionshipsatAsbury,KY;theirownFriendship Invitational;Goshen,IN;and Gettysburg,PA.HeadcoachElvin King wastabbed MOCCoach of the Year. 1994 Men's Cross Country Review Cedarville College experienced a rebuilding year in men's crosscountrybutstillflirted with makingtheNAIATop25. Five sophomores and six freshmen were part ofthe 15-man roster. Pete Simons,the lone senior on the squad,was the team's captainand toprunner. Hesetthe pacefortheYellowJacketsin every meet and even came away with two individual titles. Simons'bestoutingcameatGettysburg,PA where he outran 219 other competitors by completing the 8,000 meters in 24:31. Healso won the GoshenInvitational,placed second in the Mid- Ohio Conference meet,plus earned NCCAA All-America hon- ors byfinishing fourth asthe Jackets placed third as a team. Two Yellow Jacket newcomers,Chuck Lyngaas and Eric Crawford,also gained NCCAA All-America status. Lyngaas placed ninth overall while Crawford was 13th. Others to contribute on the men's varsity were freshman David Rea,sophomoresAndrew MillerandJosh Bell,andjunior JasonTaylor. TheYellowJackets'loneteam titlecameatGoshen and they finished third in four other meets.
