This year's Cedarville College women'strackandfieldteam wasmarked by numerous individual successes and decisiveteam victories. Theseniormem- bers wereextremely strong and provided many points for the team. The regular season culminated with the women de- fending their title for the fourth straight year as National Christian College Meet champions. AttheNationalMeet,thewomen's team scored points in all but one event, while taking first in many ofthem. The Lady Yellow Jackets secured alandslide victory and topped off a successful sea- son. Their point totals were fueled by outstanding senior athletes like Julianne Pletcher and Joy Beitler. Beitler won the 100 meter hurdles, 400 meter hurdles, high jump,and also ran on the winning 4x400relayteam.Pletcherwonthe3,000 meterandthe5,000meterrun. Cedarville women weretruetotheir winningformin the distance events. Sophomore Becky Jordan, Senior Jill Zenner, and Junior Megan Stevens all scored in the 1500 meter. Pletcher, Senior Kara Malone, and Junior Rachelle Elder swept the top Defending The Top Women's Track three places in the 5,000 meter, while Junior Becca Jenks,and Senior Michelle Burson werethirdandfourthinthe 10,000 meter. In the field events Cedarville's dominance continued; Sophomore Lindsey Mitchell and Zenner were third and fourth in the high jump behind Beitler's winning jump. Mitchell was fourth in the triple jump and Freshmen Jodi Quint was also fourth in thejavelin. Freshmen Sandy Swales and Alison Huizinga took second and fifth in the hammer. In the end, the Lady Yellow Jackets brought home another champi- onship banner and another yearofexcel- lent track and field. At the awards cer- emony for the meet alljunior and senior athletes attaining the scholar athlete awardsforhigh GPA'sand athleticscom- bined were honored. Cedarville women represented the vast majority of those receivingtheaward. Pletcher wasnamed as the outstanding female athlete for the meet.Alsoreceiving"atlarge"All-Ameri- can status for the women was Jordan for her 1500 meter race. A numberofthe men and women continued on to compete at the NAIA National meet in Atlanta, Georgia on May 21-23. Zenner was named national champion for her victory in the 3,000 meter race walk and set a new national record by 37 seconds. Burson ran an excellent marathon,and Pletcher scored points in the 10,000 meter. Beitler, who tied forsecond in the highjump and took fourth in the 400 meter hurdles, contin- ued the scoring for the women in the national meet. Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Coach Paul Orchard is in his fourth season at Cedarville and now sees the first freshmen class that he has coached graduate. Orchard is proud of their achievement and looks forward to the rest of the team benefiting from the leadership this year's seniors provided.
