by Mark Womack Men's Tennis The Cedarville College men's tennis team posted a 12- 10 dual match record during the 1998 season. Like the women, the Yellow Jackets put together their winning season withoutthe benefit of having a senior on the roster. Coach Alan Edlund's team could have easily finished with a more impressive record. The netters dropped allfourone- point matches that they were involved in. "We're quite satisfied with our season," remarked Edlund, who completed his fourth season at the helm. "We didn'thave theexperience to win those close matches,butthat will come asthe players mature. This year was a big stepping stone for ustoconsistently getback to play- ing winning tennis." One ofthe 5-4 setbacks oc- curred against Olivet Nazarene in the National Christian College Athletic Association Invitational which Cedarville hosted. The Jackets won two out of three matches to finish as the tourna- ment runner-up. Cedarville also finished second in the Mid-Ohio Conference race and was fourth in the NAIA Great Lakes Sec- tional. Brian Wilbur,ajuniorcom- pleting his second year in the pro- gram, held down the team's num- beronesingles spot. Hehada10-14 record against the opposition's top player and is 21-22for his career. The rest of the lineup had winning records for the season. In orderofsinglesposition,CarlWeise was 12-11,EricMcVeywasateam- best 18-6, James Metsger was 14- 7, Matt Taylor had a 13-10 slate, and Reuben Duncanrecorded a 11- 7 mark. Cedarville was 85-55 as a team in singles with an overall doubles record of40-28. Duncan and Metsger had a 11-6 record in doubles while McVey and Jason Hall were 4-1. Wilbur,Weise,andDuncan were named to the NAIA All- America Scholar-Athlete squad. The elite team recognizes juniors and seniors who maintain a mini- mum 3.50 cumulative grade point average.
