Communications Associate Professor Deborah Haffey .94'‘‘Oci/e by Ruthanne Pierson Huck a full-time faculty member in 1987. She is currently pursuing herPh .D.in Speech Communication atThe Ohio State Univ as well as teaching full-time at the college. Notonly is Mrs.Haffey a dedicated professor,butshe also coaches the college d team,an additional challenge she beganin 1987and presently directs today. Herfamily is also active in thecollege as her hus David Haffey,serves as a legal consultantfor the college and all three ofher children have or currently attend the college. Mrs.Haffey began a hesitant return to Cedarville when her husband relocated to the area due to work. Yet,she hasf it be an interesting and fulfilling decision. She continues to teach at Cedarville,because,"First,the students are so motiv and bright, above the national average." Her second reason links back to Aristotle, the father of rhetoric. She expl "Aristotle would only teach a student rhetoric who had a well-developed moralcharacter—he wouldn't give such a pow tool to a person who didn't have a sense ofethics." Whenasked whyshehasstayed with thefield ofSpeech Communication shereasonsthatrhetoric is anexemplaroftheliberal arts. reasons,'The field demands that one mustknow about many things and people in order to communicate—Iam never bored. In addition to this award,someofMrs.Haffey's professional highlights have been gaining tenure,working with the Hot Program, and participating in the faculty integration program headed by Dr. Estes. Her personal highlights, she hone replies are,"going to the classroom." She loves teaching. Mrs.Haffey'sstudents havebeen supportiveand mindfulofherfamily commitmentsthroughouther yearsofteaching. recalls their graciousness and understanding ofherflex-time. She also describes them as being honest,lovingly confron when necessary,and spiritually challenging. When asked whatkind oflegacy she would like to leave,she candidly answered,"Fora student tocomeand take my place doabetterjob." Shealsoshared,"Iwanttogivetostudentsaholisticexperience,tolivelife wholly withtheabilitytobringeverytl together,notjustagood life spiritually,butacompletelife andagoodsenseofthe workaround us. Iwantthemtocritiqueit,ana it and capitalize on it,informed of what weknow ofGod."
