FALL PLAY The fall play of 2000 was the first drama presented the Cedarville University fam- ily in the new theater in the Stevens Student Center. As a special part of Grandparents' Weekend , grandparents and students enjoyed the produc- tion of Smoke on the Moun- tain. The musical brought laughter from the audience members as the thespians portrayed parishioners of a coun try Baptist church during the Great Depression. Thi s light-hearted mu- sical tells the story which re- enacts a typical Sunday ser- vice in this "progressive" Bap- tist church. It depicted many scenes in which the audience members could laugh at them- selves, while "being reminded that God is interested with what is in our hearts, not how well we follow the rules; jun- ior Ken Mansfield said. Senior Vanessa Baker kept the audience laughing in her role as sign linguist June Sanders, a musically disin- clined child of the traveling Sanders family. Her interpre- tation of gospel hymns was unique and comic of the audi- ence Sophomore Ryan Culpepper added to the com- edy with his role of Reverend Mervin Og l ethorpe, the preacher of this backwoods church . Smoke on the Moun- tain was a perfect choice for Grandparents' Weekend. "It was enlightening, fun, and en- tertaining ; grandfather of Adam Henker Dick Winkler said .
