Performing quality band literature, the band has appeared before state and national conferences and in concert under the baton ofsuch guest conductors as Jim Curnow, George Strombeck, and George Wilson.Severalconcerts are presented each year on campus, in churches, and schools. Jazz Band The Jazz Band has 15-20 members se- lected by audition. The group performs music ranging from the Big Band era of the 30's and 40's through contemporary jazz arrangements. The band is active in both campus and off-campus events. UniversityJazz Singers l'he University Jazz Singers is a chamber group made up of 12-14 select voices, accompanied byan auditioned rhythm sec- tion ofpiano, bass,drums,guitar and per- cussion. Repertoire is selected from repre- sentative styles and eras ofAmerican jazz, as well asfrom other ethnic jazz traditions. The development ofimprovisational skill within the literature is emphasized among participants. Numerousconcerts and festi- val participation are planned each year Activities 145
