Brian Coon as Mr. Drummond tries to make his point in the trial scene of Inherit the Wind. spring play Inherit the Wind was Cedarville University's dramatic challenge for the spring of2002. Between April 25 and May 4, more than 40 thespians took over the stage under the direction ofDr. David H.Robey. This particular play was controversial in nature because ofthe play's message,"the supremacy ofthe individual mind," according to Robey. Robey worked alongside Dr. Richard Cornelius, professor emeritus ofEnglish at Bryan University and the leading scholar in the nation on the Scopes trial, to understand better the factual information ofthe Scopes trial. Because ofthe nature ofthe play, chapel on April 15 and 16 were dedicated to discussing the philosophical, ethical, and spiritual issues ofthe drama. Robey's hope was that the play would move the audience toward a deeper understanding ofGod's Word. 194 Spring On issues offaith, Valerie Wubbena,one ofthe women in the play's choir, stated,"It has been a privilege for me to be a part ofa production that encourages us as believers to be prepared to give an answer for the faith we hold on to. Since it is my senior year, it has been a blast being a part ofthis production, and it has also encouraged me to never stop learning so that my faith can truly become my own." Debbie Compton,a student and audience member, said,"I thought it was excellent. It was a very interesting perspective on the evolution because it showed a very non-biased view ofthe conflict. You could never tell which side the author supported. It also challenged me and reminded me that sometimes we can't have all the answers,and faith has to be enough for this life." Rob Chestnut and Brian Coon argue together over Matthew Brady's death after the court decision. Showing the vigor and robust atti- tude of Matthew Harrison Brady, Matt Olson brought the character to life.
