FLIGHT OF THE FAIRIES In the midst ofthe spring semester, Cedarville University offered a spectacular presentation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream directed by Dr. Rebecca Baker. Starting in the palace ofAthens, the action traveled to the enchanted woods outside the city. A play containing love triangles and magic spells offered challenges and excitement for actors, designers, and the audience. The designers set the scenes in Athens during the neo-classical period while placing the woods in a fantastical dreamland. Fun and whimsical, the costuming of the fairies and sprites enchanted the audience. The staging for the forest contained complex, fanciful, and stylized structures that aided in the appearance ofthe dreamy quality. Not only did the costumes and scenery catch the eyes ofthe audience, but so did the flying fairies and the acrobatics ofthe mischievous faerie Puck. The highly skilled cast performed exceptionally well in this Shakespearean comedy. The mystical faerie cast included Hannah Detwiler as the faerie queen Titania, Scott Ryan as the faerie king Oberon, and Josh Canfield as the mischievous Puck. As the Athenians played by Jillian Anderson, Michael Colletto, James Tullett, and Kristin Sando entered the enchanted forest, the fairies played tricks on the humans. The two males who formerly doted on the same female suddenly both fell in love with each other due to a misplaced love spell. A group ofcommon Athenians prepared a play for the marriage ofTheseus, played by Brain Huster, until Nick Bottom, played by Rob Chestnut, became a donkey due to a prank caused by Puck. A myriad offairies and spirits served the faerie king and queen and did their biddings. In the end, life returned to the way it should be,and the play ended happily. Cedarville's theater department did an excellentjob in its performance ofA Midsummer Night's Dream. The show sold out quickly,so they performed an on command performance, allowing more students and families the opportunity to see this masterpiece on stage. 286 SPRING SEMESTER Lysander and Demetrius battle it out for the love of the same woman.
