ATIME FOR HEROES Well before the 9:30 start time, participants and spectators accumulated on Saturday,October 12 for the 2002 Cedarville University Homecoming Parade. Grace Baptist Church was the gathering place for those walking in the parade, where dozens ofdressed up, painted, masked,and otherwise remarkable individuals milled around until the show began. Several members ofthe military led the parade's trek up North Main Street; not far behind, Dr.and Mrs. Dixon followed in a horse-drawn carriage. The Cedarville High School marching band provided music,and the sound ofhonking car and tractor horns combined with cheering and blue and gold balloons to add to the festive atmosphere. The theme ofthe parade was Heroes,and the class floats reflected this theme.The classes of2003 and 2005 tied for first place; the senior float represented the building ofFounder's Hall and the heroes ofCedarville University's beginnings, and the sophomore float focused on our"childhood heroes," complete with a flying Superman and Wonder Woman. Various student organizations also walked in the parade, including Alpha Psi Omega,Tau Delta Kappa,and College Republicans. Sophomore Matthew Spena, who attended the parade with his visiting mother,especially enjoyed Tau Delta Kappa's float, which displayed Socrates as the honors' organization's hero. "The funniest thing in the parade was Paul Compton in a toga!" Matt said. Homecoming attendants made the ride from the starting point at Grace to the ending point at Maddox Dormitory in convertibles with their names posted on the sides. Grace Gebert served as the freshman class attendant, Jessica Waggoner served as the sophomore class attendant, Kara Howe served as thejunior class attendant, and Janette Criner and Emily Gayer served as senior class attendants. Jyoti Philip, crowned homecoming queen the night before, rode in the parade wearing her crown—and a wide smile.
